72&Sunny wins NFL account? Does anyone want to work on the NFL? Declining viewership, scandals, poor treatment of women. I can only imagine...that account could be a mess. Will 72 be better than Grey?

“Declining viewership, scandals, poor treatment of women.” Is that NFL or an ad agency?

The NFL doesn’t treat women poorly. There are like 1700 players in the NFL, and the bad behavior of a few of them puts the league and fans in a really weird spot. My guess is there is just as much if not more sexual harassment and bad behavior in the advertising industry, it’s just that no one is recording it on their phones because none of us are famous. And most corporations we help make money have questionable ethics. It’s a world problem not an NFL problem. And at the end of the day selling football is more fun than selling cereal.

They pay their cheerleaders very little and next to no benefits.

Yes lots of people want to work on NFL, because celebrity athletes and budgets and built in place to run broadcast and some people (not me but) just like sports. 72 will do what they always do--run the pitch video for the first year, then come up with something that gets them sued by an artist saying they stole it (happened four times now--check it out).

The poor decisions the league makes have nothing to do with how good the ads are. Good ads don’t make Kareem hunt not kick a woman on video, and they definitely don’t make the NFL punish him faster. The problems at the NFL are internal and start with the commissioner who has to answer to 32 old rich white male owners. Anyone going into working on the NFL thinking they will change that is just incredibly naïve. Let’s just treat it for what it is - a sexy account with the opportunity to make cool work that people will see a lot of. That’s why I’d want to work on it.

SAD1: It's more than a sexy account with the opportunity to do cool work. It's an opportunity to pitch co-ops and sponsorships to other clients, establish working relationships with famous athletes, coaches and broadcasters, and leverage all the above for your agency.

NFL is going through a renaissance with a new pass heavy, high octane, offense first, limiting dangerous contact reshaping. It’s not the football I love, but its working and is back on a good trajectory. League is starting to take handcuffs off social and individual expression of its players following NBA model. Needs a new commissioner so the Kareem Hunt type stuff is dealt with faster, but I think a female commissioner will be in power on next few years and further the revival.

The grey super bowl spot was awesome. If this cmo came from Activision I imagine the work will just become more epic ala call of duty.

Worked closely on this pitch via freelance. Turns out Translation won it only to have the buddy buddy relationship of the new CMO and the 72 founders reverse the decision. Also, WK found out they lost by reading the articles. People very unhappy over at the NFL about this decision.

I have a feeling the new CMO immediately changing agencies means they may be moving away from the funny / comedy work Grey pushed them to. Hoping the work doesn’t get boring 🤞

I could never work on the NFL account. I can't support a sport that does severe, irreversible brain damage to its players. Nor do I want to work with an organization that covered up that fact for years so they could continue to make huge profits - because that was more important than the player's health (and continues to be). Add this on top of the racism, how cheerleaders are treated, etc. - nope.

I’m sorry but aren’t 90% of our clients morally questionable? Might as well work on one that people are genuinely passionate about

The 72 NFL ad was my fav for super bowl and I don't even like football. That's a spot I'd love to have in my book.

Yeah, @Spark Foundry1, like that crappy, ho-hum 54-51 snoozer between Rams and Chiefs a couple weeks ago. Highest scoring MNF ever and 3rd highest score in NFL history.

Which office?? I’d personally love to work for NFL, I agree that they are going through a renaissance and I don’t foresee this renaissance leading to their demise. The NFL won’t die, it will be changing

I enjoyed working for them. Made good work. Put a spot in the SuperBowl. Got an award. Worked with amazing talent. Who wouldn’t want that?

Mark my word the NFL is on the cusp of a renaissance and a big part of it will be females stepping into positions of power from commissioner to coaching to media. And this collective + changes to the game to be faster with more offense and less hard hitting (think Arena Football) will total rebrand this thing over next 2-4 years. So a great time to change agencies.

The renaissance you speak of isn't going to happen. People just don't have the patience to sit through dozens of ads anymore. On top of that, the prevalence of fantasy football has eroded team-specific loyalty. And then you've got the backwoods "hillbilly" negative connotation attached to the sport in this time of political divisiveness ... I'm just not seeing how tweaking a few rules solves these problems.

virtually all major companies are immoral entities, grow up or leave advertising lol. and yes some people would kill to work on that account

@O1 only problem with that logic is the new CMO is a 65 year old white dude who isnt exactly a progressive thinker. Worked with him a few agencies ago - they should have hired a woman or POC. Hope you and @APD1 are right though.

Yes, agencies would kill to get on that account. 72 & Sunny will do outstanding work.

The game may be changing but they are hemorrhaging audience. Will be interesting to see if new marketing attempts to gain back losses, deepen fan engagement with core viewers, etc etc

The Fish Bowl app just reminded me to “be constructive,” so I’m going to hold off on my intention to blast the author of this post. Instead, “Be positive.” “Keep reaching for the stars, whiny NFL-hater who obviously works at Grey, and can’t get their book in the door of 72.😀"
