Best advice is take initiative, but run it by a partner first. Just say hey I think we should do xx in the case next, how would you like me to proceed?
No harm, no foul. You showed the initiative and at the end of the day, they can't fault you for that.
In a similar boat here...going on ~4 months. Following!
My situation is weird in that I’m allowed to do certain things without oversight that I wasn’t before but then totally not allowed to do other tasks that I was without oversight before. I’m just trying to be patient and not step on toes while asking if it’s ok to do things on files. Hoping that things will adjust but I think it’s harder in COVID times with people not in the office as much and less available for face-to-face interactions. Good luck!
Well, would you let an unknown adult run amok with your hard earned clients?
This seems reasonable
I say this with love, but WHERE did you practice for the last 7 years where there were clear timelines and goal posts for ANYTHING related to your professional development
Talk with your team? Like, want to make sure my integration is going smoothly - here’s where I think I can take more off your plate given my experience, or is there some particular preference or issue this client has for certain tasks, etc
I don’t see it as confrontation versus a check in chat that you can use strategically to advance your goals. But these are not always successful and depends on your style and relationships.
More specifics or examples would be helpful to provide the best advice. Trust must be earned. If the firm is micromanaging negotiations of rule 11 agreements or stipulations or waivers of service, that is ridiculous but if the firm is wanting to know the litigation plan before you bill $10,000 on motions practice on case, that is reasonable at the beginning of your employment.
I concur. If you don't have a book of clients, you can't expect autonomy.
Again, goalposts. I want to know what I need to accomplish to be treated like an adult.
It’s been a week. Deep breath. Give it a couple months to learn people’s names, let alone what they do, who their clients are, the statuses of their cases, and what they NEED from you. For now, just learn everything, ask questions and just listen.
