8 years experience in Social Work. Have undergraduate degree in Sports Management and Masters in Social Work. Have taken the Licensing exam 3 times and failed.

Will be 31 in January and am wondering whether I should continue this career path. If I did decide on another career path I have no idea what that would be. Currently making around 60k, would be happier in the 70-80 range.

Wondering if HealthCare is worth it long term..

Any suggestions?

I understand that not passing boards is disheartening. Personally, I think the only reason to stop taking it is if you no longer want to be an LCSW. No one cares how many times you've taken it once you pass.
But if you choose, you can consult or life coach. It's an unpopular opinion but you're more qualified than many coaches and being unlicensed gives flexibility to practice across states or even internationally if you want.
You're not too old, considering many people go back to grad school after age 31. But if you have any interest, follow the trail and see where it leads.

Definitely have aspirations to get both the L and the C. And also think a consult or life coach could really help. Will look into that certainly. Thank you 🏆🏆

There are some positions in hospitals that will hire you as a case manager that will bump you up to around 70k. Health care pay sucks in general

Thought about pursuing a hospital role. I’ve been on the frontlines pretty much. Think maybe Administration would be a better fit.

Look into lmswbootcamp..google it helped me pass! Dont give up. Take the class it will i. Every student i have ever referred has passed with this course.

Good luck!

Definitely have that and used it but certainly will use it again. I’m planning on taking the exam again in a few months. Thank you! 🏆

Healthcare is not the easiest field to be in that's for sure, but I think there are definitely opportunities out there outside of the board exams stuff. It might be worth looking more on the operations/administration side to see if that's a better fit?

This stuck with me as soon as I read it. Thought maybe the Clinical track is not it for me anymore.

Getting your MSW can definitely get you the salary range you're looking for. A care management supervisor at an MCO can get north of 80k at most places.

Being here in NY I know there’s opportunity, I don’t think I’m looking correctly as well as the barrier of passing the exam.

Took mine 4 times NCMHCE. Passed it on the 4th. Nobody cares. It was crushing each time. A colleague told me she passed it in 22 minutes.

I later found out it was her 3rd time taking it.

I passed in 40 minutes on my 4th try. And having started it early because the test administrator offered me the chance, I finished it about 10 minutes after my appointment time.

I told my wife if I failed on my 4th try, I’d go back to my engineering career of 17 years.

I’m currently working full time from home (since March 2020) and have been a clinical manager/supervisor for the past 18 months as well.

I was 36 when I started my Master’s program. 45 when I saw my first client in private practice. Persistence can certainly pay off. But I know what it’s like to build up the doubt and fear.

It’s a hard call to make. But it’s yours and yours alone.

I have my LMSW and about 2 years experience working in an acute care hospital in a case management role. It’s been my experience that hospitals can vary widely on social worker salary. Licensure will definitely give you a nice salary increase, particularly for LCSW. one of the hospitals I work at, the LCSW salary is around 78k. I just accepted a position as a Case Manager at an inpatient rehabilitation hospital at 70k where they will also supervise for my LCSW and CCM (certified case manager). I’d say healthcare and licensure can definitely get you the salary range you want if you enjoy being in this field. Don’t give up on getting your license, it’s worth it when you pass!

Your new opportunity sounds great! The gifts and curses of not being satisfied is really a conundrum. Thank you for the insight! 🏆

I have been with my company for almost 8 years. I wasn’t certified when I started but I have been now for about a year. It wasn’t required before. I learned that my coworker who has been with us less than a year and had no prior experience in healthcare makes very close to the same amount I do. My boss says our rates are based on our experience which is clearly not true. One of our none clinical members who left was making the same as me. Does this seem right to you guys?
