What this article does not specify is the type of nurse. There are many different levels of nursing, where there is a much clearer baseline for physicians. Nurses could be a CNA, which is a certificate you could get while still in high school LPN - A 2 year technical degree plus qualifying exam. RN - 4 year bachelor of nursing plus qualifying exam NP - a terminal level nursing degree (PhD level) which allows them to prescribe medications and in some states, have their own practices. There are also different certifications and degrees they can get along the way. This goes to say that there is a large variance among nurses in their education, experience, and scope of practice. It seems like the person(s) conducting this survey were either reductive in their scope, or unaware of the variance in the nursing field.

The overall vaccination rate in the US is 51%, I’m just surprised it’s not significantly higher for nurses even taking into account the different levels of nurses.

There are 1M doctors in the US and 5M nurses. To be a doctor requires finishing undergrad and going away at least as far as your state’s medical school and perhaps farther afield for residency. It ensures training with people from other communities and challenging your ideas, and if we being honest it also often means coming from a family of significant means that can help support you through those studies or at least have the knowledge to even guide you on how to begin applying to medical school. Nurses can have degrees ranging from an associates/certification all the way up to a PhD, and could complete their degree at an ivy or become nurses without ever leaving their rural hometown. Physicians will at some point have to train at an academic medical center where they will participate in research. Some nurses will too, but others may complete their entire training and career at a community hospital or clinic and never have the opportunity to participate in a research process. It makes complete sense to me that there would be wider variance in the rate of vaccine hesitancy among nurses because they just represent a less homogenous slice of the American public.

Nurses are more likely to be tricked into a MLM schemes 😂

likefunny

Nurses I know that are anti-vaxx are big into MLM’s with anything considered alternative or natural medicine. CBD oil, Bossbabe, essential oils, slim down gummies. None of which are FDA approved. I’m not arguing with a soul about our vaccines and FDA. I’m all vaxxed up and would get the other 2 if I was able. But more that it is an often argument for anti-vaxx peeps, yet they shill stuff that both doesn’t have FDA approval and never will.

My guess is physicians are more thoroughly educated, specifically in medicine and organic chemistry so better understanding with vaccines. RN only requires a BS, LVNs and others only need trade school. Not a knock against nurses, but maybe it's coincidental that higher educated leads to higher vaccination rates

likesmartfunny

Lol not sure why that’s funny. Seems pretty obvious

like

Anecdotal, but I’ve never had multiple doctors try to sell me on essential oils, while nurses have.

I know a lot of great, well-educated nurses, but I also know way more nurses who barely graduated HS, got their nursing degrees from community colleges or schools that accept everyone, and who are generally just very stupid people. There is such a need for nurses that the bar is LOW. Definitely not the best and brightest as a whole.

I'll preference this by saying the role Nurses play in medicine is crucial and that they are 100% underpaid for the work that they perform. But there is a significant difference in the standards and objectives of the education of a Nurse and a Physician.

I don’t know, every nurse I know smokes cigarettes. The article did mention a lack of paid leave time, childcare, etc. would affect the lower SES persons.

Politics. The answer is politics. It doesn’t matter how smart you are, politics make people dumb. It’s just how the human brain works…plenty of very intelligent people have joined cults, for example. If this wasn’t politicized, the data would probably make more sense. I’d also say nurses on average are younger than established doctors are.

likesmart

Because doctors get paid for the vaccines and nurses see the effects.

likefunnysmart

QAE1 - doctors don’t have this vaccine to give out. Please stop using your distrust of the doctors in your life as proof that nurses lower vaccination rate has anything to do with doctors being paid. I can essentially kill this notion immediately- Doctors only get paid if you’re sick. If it were only about the $ on vaccines, why TF would they want to prevent you from getting something that earns them the dollars?!? This is still so $&#%Ing dumb. Majority of people don’t go to a doctor unless they are sick. Vaccines overwhelmingly prevent major infections. If the $ is the motivation, they are way more incentivized to keep you sick. (Which they don’t, majority of doctors are good people. I’m literally just pointing out the obvious cracks in this theory) And again, doctors aren’t administering the covid vaccines to anyone. So they aren’t getting paid for them. God this is exhausting. Just get vaccinated or die mad. I don’t care. But the misinformation is insane. Stop.

It’s actually pretty for a lot of NPs. Bigger problem than just this too that so many people get in the door so easily for something so important

It’s a known fact for some reason the “mean girls” from high school end up being nurses. i read an article that it had to do with them feeling like they had power over individuals in high school and it translates to them feeling empowered in their job. Maybe that has something to do with it. *i will say i have so many nurse friends and they’re not mean at all i respect them so much for all they do just saying i saw that in a article lol*

D1- a friend of mine who was a nurse said most of the doctors were already married and just wanted a nice nurse mistress. Kinda depressing.

Seriously shaking my head at the plethora of comments on FB that suggest education level as the strongest argument for why someone would be vaccinated vs not. Like my masters in accounting in ANY WAY qualifies me to know more about a vaccine or not? Not all nurses are stupid, not all doctors are smart.

No one in this thread is saying correlation, just reaffirming what the facts and statistics are telling us.

It’s a change management issue.

On average, physicians have higher IQs than nurses.
