9-6 is too much? How much less do you want to work??? After you play onFB, take a 75 min lunch and talk to your buddies on the phone, you may be working a 6-7 hour day.
Why in the world are you working for 40 years? Start saving and investing more and get yourself out of there in 10-15
This is what I was standing in the middle of my living room thinking about ten seconds ago. Truth.
If the idea of that terrifies you (and it should) look for other opportunities for financial independence. The raw truth is that there are people out there who do go 40 years 9-6. If you want out, be different
Startup, VC or own business.
My client (federal) spend 12 years w Accenture, woke up realized she had money but no family, was alone, etc. went internal, had a baby in her own and moved to gov last year; just had baby #2 (still single, but had her family). She is frustrated beyond hell with her job and the incompetent people she works with, but she had a 9-5 and her babies....so it all depends on what you want more.
Deloitte 4 speaks truth. Buy your freedom. No reason to work 40 years with a consultant salary.
A1-think you may be right in which case OP make as much money as you can and get out early. Also, stop thinking in 40 year increments. Where do you want to be in 3-5. Lots of interesting companies to work for.
If it takes you 40 years to retire, you did it wrong. Really wrong.
Gov't employees max out around like 250k but you need to be in the senior executive service for that

Own your own business (I agree with you guys that a government job would be boring)
Also maybe work for a nonprofit or think tabk
You can get hours like that in industry if you look . I think you will need more of a challenge than government work. There are tons of companies out there to explore!
