A bit torn trying to decide whether spouse& I should have a big celebration for my birthday+new job. Background: I was on a student visa so couldn’t switch jobs easily. I used to see my friends get new jobs+huge jumps in pay, and felt very undervalued/overworked at current firm. Then I got married, got my green card, after which I applied & got a new job doubling my comp. Would really like to go to Masa ($650 per head) but we’re very dedicated to FIRE. How do you decide when to treat yourself?

By recalling that you might die tomorrow, and that if you continue your mindset, when you retire, I can tell you right now you're going to still be cheap and not treat yourselves.

I was debating whether or not I should go to Iceland for my graduation trip. It was going to be half my NW at the time - my friend told me, just fking go! you're going to be making great money at your first job. Then I no longer hesitated.

I'm sure you make great money in finance, and if you don't start conditioning yourself to enjoy the journey, then you won't really know how to enjoy FIRE life imo. Toxic thoughts like "this is too wasteful, I might run out of money before I die" might come up during retirement...Make the good memories with the spouse! You earned it.

congrats! just because you’re on the FIRE path, doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate! This is a huge milestone and I would say go treat yoself!!!

This is big. Go have a blast!

Omg this is such a huge achievement and requires a big celebration. We both were on work visas and even more dependent on the company than you were. We celebrated like 3 times after we got our green cards.

Went to a steakhouse when we got the approval notices, then went to an expensive Italian restaurant when we got the actual cards and then went on a trip to celebrate with our friends as well

Do it! Enjoy yourself along the journey. I’ve never regretted splurging on experiences.

Life is too short. This is great milestone to celebrate. As long as you stay dedicated I don’t see why not. Congrats!

new to investing. have done some research - reading blogs and a few books on investing. Serious question - is there a reverse FIRE strategy? I like the idea of saving and retiring early, but the one hiccup I see (and sorry if this is grim) is if you die earlier than expected. I’d be worried that I would minimize lifestyle and fun for retirement at 50 but I’d die at 49. How about a way to work 9 months out of the year and retire/travel/relax for 3 months? This way you guaranteed your dreams/etc. are fulfilled
