A company I really admire is hiring for an in—house role in my city. I use and recommend their products constantly & would really love to work there. They’re asking for a coverletter & I’m not sure how best to convey my specific interest in their brand without making my letter sound like a form letter OR making it sound like fan mail. Any recs?

Fan mail is ok. In fact, it is good. I am in house now (and help interview all new candidates for my group) and was previously on the hiring committee in a big law firm. I have never seen a candidate who was too enthusiastic such that it hurt their prospects. Fake enthusiasm will hurt, but if you have genuine excitement, express it! It will only help. If you know the company and its products inside and out, showcase that knowledge don’t hide it.

While I think it’s unfortunate that this type of analysis factors so heavily in hiring decisions, it absolutely does matter quite a bit and sometimes you have to play the game you’re in, not the one that would be fairest.

I agree - they want you to be excited about what they do. It’s almost as important as your qualifications IMO. They want someone who is invested and cares about what they are doing.

I applied for a similar role, and I included one sentence in the first paragraph about why I was particularly excited about the company. In the final paragraph I included 1-2 more sentences. I kept it short and simple, but personal enough that I hoped it seemed genuine.

The company later implemented a hiring freeze, so no idea how it went over 😂

Just be a little careful about this. E.g., when I was in law school it was my life’s dream to get a legal internship at Marvel because I love comics. I even got interviewed but didn’t make it past. I should have been emphasizing what I loved about the legal aspects of their work (e.g., copyright) rather than the fan aspect. Make sure your cover letter makes you sound like an adult who knows the difference (unlike baby me 😂). You can express enthusiasm for their mission generally, but that’s not enough.

Spoke to the recruiter and they mentioned that 3 people are ahead of me in the process. I understand that others are being interviewed but how can I catch up or be the first to finish the interviews? Have had times before where someone else finishes and is offered the job first

Been working in the same position for a long time and have had over 10 interviews for promotions but keep getting passed over. Company has given very little direct feedback to improve short of “keep at it” etc. Yet we keep going outside the organization for talent because we say we are short on leaders from our competitors. What would you do?

I have 10 months of recruitment experience , but while hiring for UI/UX, I got interested in the domain. Right now, I am scared whether I'll be able to get any job or not, as I don't have prior experience. Please suggest me what to do.

Does anyone know of any good job options in FL for attorneys who are not licensed in FL? I’m wanting to move back to be closer to my family but I really do not want to take the bar again. I’ve applied for some in house roles but I’ve only got three years of practice so I’m not sure I’m qualified. Is it possible to find something or will I need to suck it up and take the bar again?

I feel totally blindsided by the interview I just had. I talked informally with Partner 1 before the interview and was told the position would be in one of the firm’s satellite offices. Then, during an interview with Partner 1 and Partner 2, Partner 2 mentioned that I’d have to move to the state where the firm is headquartered because he believes face-time is really important for training/mentoring. I have no plans to move and really hope this wasn’t all a huge waste of time.
