A girl from the firm went from a staff associate to a controller in private. How did she do it? I find it strange.

At a small company that’s very possible. Especially if it’s a straightforward business. Debits/credits, look up anything you don’t know, and let the auditors clean up the rest 😂. I’ve worked with controllers that don’t have accounting degrees lol, it happens.

At some really small companies the controller is basically doing the work of a senior. I had a classmate in my masters program who was a controller of a small company without a CPA. Ended up coming back to school because their progression had capped out at that level.

Worked on a client where the controller had even less credentials. She just happened to know where the executive hid all the bodies

Yeah going from 1st year senior to controller

That’s still wild 😂

Titles in private are sometimes meaningless and inconsistent in qualifications and duties. My guess would be she’s the top accountant reporting to the owner at a small business.

I had a staff with less than 2 years get a role as Accounting Manager and there was no way they had the experience at that time to even be a senior accountant staying at our company. Going from about $350m revenue to less than $3m

Assuming it’s a small company, she has connections, or is an excellent salesperson.

Any thoughts on W&C, PH or Shearman in NY? Chambers seems to suggest that Shearman is a little stronger in the areas it’s good at, but not as broad as the other two. Is that a fair assessment?

How should I handle a co-teacher who says things in class that are ableist? I don't think she realizes she's doing it, but with more than a few vision or hearing impaired students in her classroom it's pretty noticeable to me. None of them have complained about it, but I doubt they would. I just think sayings like "what are you blind?" are pretty tone deaf when you have vision impaired students. Even if it isn't aimed at them or it's said jokingly.
