Job market is very competitive right now where seasoned ad people are struggling to find things. Will be even harder for your friend who doesn’t have an ad focused book if she didn’t study advertising directly to measure up to those who did for junior AD positions. Content strategy is more copy than visual as well.
Maybe she should consider designer roles since I’m assuming that was what she studied and work her way up to AD.
Or if she wants to do more photo work, this role is super competitive too but in the publishing/media world, she can look into (Junior/Associate) Photo Editor roles. They’re a hybrid producer and art director roles for print and/or digital publications. They commission photo projects or help produce + eventually art direct photo shoots.
If she doesn’t have an advertising student portfolio I wouldn’t spend energy applying for AD positions (especially junior positions that aren’t internships). The market is super competitive right now. She might have better luck with design positions or “Maker-y” positions if she has other skill sets like premiere or illustration. If she doesn’t have a portfolio of non ad work she has she should create one and try to tailor it to what she’s applying for (e.g. if you’re applying for graphic design positions the journalism articles you’ve written are a side project not on your main page).
i know you said content strategist, but more broadly, strategy tends to be open to people coming from other disciplines. she might have some luck looking for junior strat roles. i also come from a journalism background - it teaches you how to ask why, how to unearth stories, and how to tell them, which are all critical strategy skills. you’ve just got to frame it as such to future employers. jack morton is hiring a strategist in nyc. they seem to want industry experience, but may be worth looking into. creative strategy at a publisher - like the t brand studio - could work too. tends to involve heavy creative ideation, and attracts ex-journalists
