A law school friend of mine has two GREAT offers to lateral to either Kirkland and Ellis or Orrick. She’s leaning Orrick. Interested to hear your thoughts?

One is known for burning out associates and the other is on the forefront of work life balance initiatives in biglaw…Orrick is a no brained unless she is passionate about PE and knows for a fact she wants to do that the rest of her life. Billable credit for vacation time alone is reason enough. Source: I am a KE associate.

Orrick is my dream firm, from what I hear about it. Kirkland is a nightmare, also from what what I hear about it.

likesmart

Avoid Orrick at all costs. All the feel good initiatives are total window dressing. Correct re stealth layoffs, pay cuts, scammy ways to calculate bonuses. Very poor business outlook except in the public finance space, where they are well established.

like

Orrick is a solid emerging companies firm, but would not call them a top firm in that space.

Cooley, WSGR, Fenwick, Gunderson, even Goodwin and Latham are significantly stronger in that space (EC/VC, tech M&A, tech cap markets)

I previously worked at orrick - can’t speak to every group there but overall my time there was great. Haven’t heard the same about K&E. I think the only better thing about working there is more intense/better clients and deals

likesmart

You can take what I’m saying in my posts as about as close to actual confirmation as is legally permitted.

To weigh in on the other side, Orrick cut associate salaries (and pushed further hour/salary reductions) pretty quickly during COVID and was among the last to raise them back up. Same thing with associate start dates and summer program cuts. The were unconfirmed rumors of stealthings. Most of this was inconsistent with the actions of what I would consider to be their peer firms. K&E, AFAIK, did not do all of this.

like

I have only had bad experiences with K&E.

like

Without knowing more about which practice group your friend would be joining, I’m majorly inclined to say Orrick. I know a good number of folks at K&E and they are miserable.

Would love to stay on my current clients but open to transferring, however I don’t want to ask to transfer unless I’m really going to put an offer down.

2nd year here: When do you leave a firm because your not getting any work? I don’t want put details but it’s not due to lack of trying on my end. I’ve also been told I do good work and people like working with me. We also hired too many people this past year and partners hoard hours for bigger bonus. How long do I stick it out? I like my firm and don’t want to leave but I think I have to.
