How can you reduce the risk of death by 27%?
Does running make 1 in 4 people immortal?
Yeah now that I read it, I see what you’re saying. It’s a common way of saying reducing risk of an early death.
The motivation I needed this am. See you out there, fellow death risk reducers!
🙌 I posted this as I was getting ready to run for the first time in a month.
tldr; “people who go for a run just once a week can reduce risk of death from any cause by as much as 27 percent.”
- “another study that found that people who engage in 30 minutes of jogging for women, or 40 minutes of jogging for men, for five days per week, end up with bodies that act (from a physiological standpoint) as if they were nine years younger.”
Epidemiological studies cannot imply causation, especially when the effect size is less than 2 (1.37x here). While I don’t doubt that running is healthy, all this study demonstrates is that people who run are more likely to also be healthy
But is it *because* they run, or are they healthier to begin with, higher educated, have better genetics, less depressed, have more free time, eat healthier also, etc. Any one of these confounding variables can explain the effect.
This kind of weak science is what most of nutrition science is based on, and it’s a major reason why the long-standing “recommendations” are wrong, and why America is so obese
We don’t waste our time on bad data from clients. We shouldn’t do it in our personal lives either.
...people, we work in data. I think we all know how to read this.
The type of people who choose to run at least once a week are likely making other healthy choices in their lives. Correlation is not causation.
Just because you decide to run once a week does not make up for eating and drinking too much on the road and depriving your body of sleep. Please do not think you can implement a once per week run and magically turn your health around.
Fair enough. If you’re looking for a reason to incorporate a modicum of healthy behavior, I guess this article provides that. As does common sense.
I think functional fitness would be even better. Running can lead to a myriad of lower extremity injuries. Cross training burns fat, builds muscle, and increases anaerobic function.
A1 I don’t think that’s the point of the article. It’s saying that even in a busy world, the simple concept of running once a week reaps significant benefits. I’m sure if they did a study on functional fitness you might find similar results.
Is running the only way to reap these benefits? What about weights?
holy moly
