$300-400k? What level are you looking at...
Yea but they are also way smarter than you

Not really, that’s why I spend all my time building technical skills and studying for coding interviews
Solution architect, cloud engineer
If I was any good at SW engineering or had any interest in it I’d be doing it. Unfortunately the market seems to think they’re harder to find than consultants, and I’m datapoint 1 :(.
Exit opps would he at director level. Been offered one, pay was comparable but I’m not quite ready to hang it up yet
Mid-level, i.e, these numbers are quite common for sw engineers w/ 6-10 yrs exp
There are a lot more senior operations roles though, and those pay very handsomely. Look at the long term career prospects, and not just the short.
Well it’s not like I’m dumb...
I’m sure plenty of us could be software engineers, but the market definitely values them higher. Go get it!
How many is a "a lot?" I never seen 1 developer from a client who is making over 200k.
@OP You're only making that much if you're a manager at a large tech company and have ~10 years experience, or you're super specialized in what you do and are irreplaceable. You're also much more stressed out and have to take responsibility if something goes wrong.
It's maybe a better work life balance, but definitely not *low level of effort. SWEs work quite a bit. They're typically just smart and like what they do.

My friends with less than 12 years of exp make 350k and work normal hours at aws, and google
@KPMG1: surprising since Google/FB pretty much pay new SW Eng grads ~200k all in
That makes a little more sense.. 2 companies. Sounds like we're talking the top few % instead of general. I guess it's more about learning what skill sets they value/need there and working your way into those specific companies. I've seen other fortune 200/100/50 where the very best of their senior software people are making ~180-200. But nice bonuses.
