Sure, you’ve got the one-off scenarios like some people mentioned above. People want so badly to give the benefit of the doubt.
But by FAR, the most common scenario that I’ve seen play out multiple times with friends throughout my life is:
-Dude claims he’s single or “divorced.”
-Dude starts dating an unsuspecting woman who accepted his “single/divorced” status
-After some time it comes out that he was neither single nor “divorced” but rather:
A) married to a partner that was unaware of their new “single/divorced” status.
B) “separated” but not in the legal sense. Things are rough in the marriage and he may feel they are “heading towards divorce” but hasn’t actually taken any real steps to initiate separation and divorce.
Thus you get the self-proclaimed but incorrect “single/divorced” status. They use this term very loosely without regard for its proper syntax or definition.
Life 🐠 babies. This is life and I’ve seen it all 🍵
Your living situation and your relationship status can be independent of one another

Could be optics. My parents are separated but not divorced but my dad always brings up his wife/kids at work for optics.
