@evp ecd1, no one is thinking of it personally but it’s absolutely pathetic as an industry standard for that level of creative. if their margins are shrinking perhaps they should consider paying their CCO’s and CEO’s less than the massive amounts they currently get. 🤷🏾♂️ don’t expect CD’s to accept that leave pay, and work their asses off for you.
Agencies do it because their shrinking margins force them to. And CDs will consider it because there aren’t many agencies hiring or paying more. It’s simply supply and demand. You have to remember, it’s not personal, it’s just business.
and further more, why are some CDs accepting this as OK?
The whole industry is getting lowballed.

Same reason shitty, tightwad brands get 10 agencies to waste time and $ to pitch their business: because SOMEONE will always, always want it.
A recruiter reached out to me on LinkedIn, she had an ACD role with 7 designers under, no CD, so the ACD role was technically the CD. Salary was about 135k. I told her I expected 165–175 as an ACD. She said she’d had a couple people with my expectations, but on the other end, talented people who’d been floored to find out they could make over 100k. Stunning.
Any half decent senior or ACD would have to take a pay cut for that role. The only people who would take are desperate.
Creative Director OP Even ECDs and CCOs aren’t making what those roles used to pay. Back in the late 90s, I found out what 2 highly regarded ECDs were earning. Almost 20 years later, at the same level, I’m making what they made.
Also, this company may have smaller clients, or more project-based work. In the end, you can always pass on it.
They’re just price shopping. Obviously they’re looking for someone desperate OR a senior creative looking to step up
For a different role. A recruiter called me 3 months ago and we ended the conversation with her telling me I make too much money. Three months later I’m being called back they’ve reconsidered their salary
Sad, I had a CD promote himself to Sr CD, when I’m still stuck at ACD, even though I was promised a promotion.
