This past summer, a group of our scholars made their own EP, including the writing, recording, and production all on their own. Even if it’s not my typical music genre to listen to, I’m so proud and impressed by their work. Mine are program specific and come from my years in the industry. If the CTE bowl continues to grow, maybe we could add subject matter taught to help each other out more.
There are resources in Virginia as well as SkillsUSA that can help. I would suggest checking that out.
I do “live work” and the students listen in on the conversations with customers. It helps them because they are seeing something as close “educationally” as possible to what the industry is
I teach Culinary Arts. To facilitate the instruction of cooperative learning, each student group has color coded job tags that they wear in class. The team leader reads the recipe and tells the grocer what tools and ingredients to get. The leader also tells the cook how to combine and prepare these ingredients. Groups with 4 students have an assistant who helps each person in the group as needed.
The use of color coded job tags makes it easy to spot students who aren't following the cooperative group structure. only students with green grocer and orange assistant tags should be getting supplies. Only students with blue cook tags should be handling the ingredients at each station. The team leader (white tag) should have the recipe.
Agree with Virginia’s comment about group work and communication. Many high school students can’t make eye contact when speaking to a teacher. I demand my students talk to me and look at me. Awkward? Yes. But it gets better for everyone - I promise! And more work? You betcha! But well worth it.
