A partner said on a client call that we really miss an associate I’m filling in for and that the team should be up to speed when she gets back. I can’t help feeling a bit slighted by that. I get that she’s much more senior (I’m a 1st year who started a couple of months ago) but I don’t think I’ve done a bad job at all. My first brief was spot on arguments wise and didn’t have much redlines. Am I reading too much into it? Should I check in with him to ask if he’s unhappy with my work?

You’re reading too much into it. There’s a handful of first years in the entire firm I even know.

likefunny

…you’re a first year. He can’t manage the deal without a mid to senior person and you honestly probably don’t want him to, partners are not usually good at teaching/training first years. This is not something to get competitive about. It’s not a slight on you at all, you’re probably doing fine, but its impossible for you to do what she does.

The partner probably said this to emphasize staffing continuity to client--has nothing to do with you!

Agree. You’re reading too much into it. If anything this should be a positive sign your firm has a good team culture and values associate contributions/ speaks favorably of people behind their back. Missing someone with institutional knowledge who does great work isn’t at all disparaging your contributions. No sweat, you just started!

This is a huge relief for me. I thought I was reading too much into it but I couldn’t help shaking the thought off; it was going to stay with me throughout the day. Thank you all so much!
