A random thought about covid - before everyone jumps down my throat I’m not saying this is how it should be just curious as to your opinion (see comments)

It’s not just about the mortality rate. It’s about spreading infections over time. If we open up again too soon, and the infections spreads too quickly, our hospitals will be overrun, even if a lot of the people in them survive.

We were supposed to use this time to ramp up testing so we could have a test+trace program in place. The WHO recommended that on Jan 24. It’s nearly 3 months later, and I’m not optimistic we’re ready, so get ready to stay inside for a while or to open up and go right back in after a week or two.

Good for OP for questioning your regularly scheduled programming. He’s right, btw.

I think there’s an issue that a lot of people didn’t know they had preexisting conditions.

What is the percentage of people who have died from covid that had no pre-existing conditions at all? We know that covid is, for the most part, only deadly if you have pre-existing conditions and elderly (mostly cause they likely have pre-existing conditions), but do you think then that most businesses could realistically be up and running with the guidelines being focused on those with pre-existing conditions?

First, enough with the caps, we get it and no one said they weren’t staying at home...second, so you’re solution is to stay home until we have a perfect answer, that isn’t viable cause we may not ever have a perfect answer

@CD, but things like construction, lawn care, etc could easily be working right now...those manual labor type jobs are generally not close quarters and those are some of the businesses that will be hit the hardest by this...to me it seems like there’s too much focus on one thing opens and everything opens. I feel like there are options to open some things up that aren’t being explored

smart

You asked if “most businesses could realistically be up and running,” which is what I responded to. While construction and lawn care might be possibilities, you must remember that any time someone leaves their home, they’re taking a risk.

While those jobs might not be close quarters, the people at them still have to travel (in private cars? on public transportation?), they have to eat (will they bring food from home? Buy on-site?), and they’ll be exposing themselves for hours a day before taking whatever they catch back home, where there may be at-risk people.

There’s also no way to ensure they truly are socially distancing in their workplaces. Now, if we had a robust testing regimen in place and could actually test workers when they got to work, we could talk. But given our ignorance, it seems like a lot of risk.

This is probably a dumb thought

How is this a dumb thought EY2? This is our reality

Burn the unbeliever!

Booo

Obviously there’s other factors but just thinking from a perspective of how could we get things up and running..lol sorry for the delay started typing and had to answer a work email

About 10% of the US population has diabetes - one of the underlying medical conditions that can make it severe.

A very, very, very small percentage.

I work for a physician and he is on a panel with other physicians, and I can tell you that a lot of people that have died with “no pre existing conditions” Had underlying health problems like obesity or type two diabetes that were undiagnosed. This is really deadly with people that are seemingly health but overweight. Many times the reports don’t answer fully the questions, like there was a young person that died but they had asthma. Although I’m sure that this disease can kill a completely healthy person if it got away from the medical community, but for the most part this is targeting the elderly and unhealthy

I read that an “underlying condition” that is causing bad outcomes is obesity. Even in the young.
Think about that along with diabetes, asthma, chemo, etc.)

How do I negotiate salary on an offer?

Currently making 88 TC at 2 YOE with Deloitte GPS consulting. Offer for an S&O role came in at 95k base and 5k year end performance bonus.

I’m worried that the mid-year salary adjustment would mean that I’d be jumping for equal or less comp. should I ask for $110k so I could get down to $105? That would translate to at least a 20% increase from my current base comp.
