😂. Lesson learned. It's always best to take a moment to reflect on the offer before responding back. You can ask for 24 hrs or maybe 2 hrs if you can do it sooner. I always ask for at least 24hrs. Unless you already have a clear and predetermined target number in mind and you have rationale and talking points ready, then you might be able to reply on the spot. Most of the time you are super excited or disappointed with the offer. That is why it's best to take the time to reflect even if you are well prepared with facts and data. Emotions could cause you to misrepresent.

Having a number is the start of the negotiation. It's the rationale and your talking points that you need to present with the numbers that is the most important. You have to make the case and sell them on why you deserve a higher offer.
Don’t feel bad about it. I once got an offer that came in ~20% lower than what I was making, rejected and rescinded, then got calls from about 6 HR reps. It only feels bad in the moment, afterwards when the awkward feeling fades you’ll know you made the right choice
Why feel stupid?? If you know your worth and that’s what you countered with, walk if they can’t support you.
