A recruiter for a JV company of 2 large, respected companies (one is a private equity group) is offering me an in-house job with the JVco. Is this a good career move?? Any advice on working for a JV?

It could be depending on your goals and where you work currently. We would honestly need more information about both.

Anyone bought an attractive office chair that is also supportive for your back?

It will be in the middle of my living space so needs to not be ugly. TIA!

Has anyone (or anyone you know personally) quit their job because your agency required return to office and you/they just can’t do that again? I keep waiting for the quitting wave to start (as predicted by every publication on the internet). I only know of one person. But I can’t deal with the idea of being chained to a desk at a not-my-place anymore.

“So, what’s your process?” has GOT to be the silliest interview question for a writer. Today I finally answered honestly that there’s no formula for this. You either have it or you don’t. Talent and some amount of fairy dust is what makes it happen.

Hi Folks,

Would like to know work life balance in PwC AC Kolkata - Advisory Services.

Even though some job postings include the range, the recruiter still asks me what my desired salary range is? Im totally fine with the salary range posted in the job description - that’s why I applied. Do you guys usually give a higher number or just narrow the range down but stay within the salary range posted with the job description?

I have 5+ YOE in QA area and my current CTC is 6 LPA. I got an offer of 15 LPA. Is it wise to accept this offer? I mean jumping directly from 6 LPA to 15 LPA.

Additional Posts in In-House Counsel

I could use some perspective from my fellow 🐠: had an interview with a Deputy GC a little over 2 weeks ago. They said at the end of the interview that they were going on vacation so it might take a little longer than usual to hear back. They did not provide a timeline for next steps otherwise.

Is this code that they want to move the process forward with other candidates first, or am I overthinking things? Should I follow up or just let the process play out?

I’m a 7-8ish years out director of legal at a small media company. I’ve been here about 3 years and want out, but I’m not sure whether it’s the right time considering that I don’t want to go to a giant company with tons of lawyers (I get emails from Netflix, roku, Viacom recruiters frequently). My goal job is to be the first legal hire at a media startup and eventually build out my own team. Am I too early for that?

Just started my second in house job, fully remote and work from home. Got my computer set up and was horrified to find new company uses Skype and WebEx instead of Teams. What in the fresh hell is this? These programs are trash.

Due to pandemic, I cannot attend a conference in-person and will miss the in-person networking that is critical to business development. Brainstorming ways to effectively connect virtually with in-house counsel. What are some ways outside counsel (folks you have never met) could get your attention? For example, if outside counsel sent you a Starbucks credit or an UberEats credit with an invitation for a 15-min coffee Zoom or 30-min lunch/chat n’ chew Zoom - would you accept?

Is Profile magazine legit or a pay for play?

Waiting to hear from an in house job and received another offer from a firm - it seems highly likely that the in house job will give an offer but would it be acceptable to reach out and inform them of this pending offer to gauge their timeline? I don’t want to keep the firm waiting or let the offer lapse.

I continuously have a problem with one of our business unit leaders wanting to have a more “direct” relationship with outside counsel on major litigations. This involves scheduling calls to discuss strategy, etc. when I’m not available. Our counsels are sympathetic, but it’s awkward to need to ask them not to take this person’s calls and/or to brief me after the fact. Anyone else dealt with a similar situation? How do you deal with these types of issues?

My background is in tech transactional. I joined a cybersecurity SaaS startup at the end of last year and now also handle more generalist matters in addition to all things commercial-related. I have a number of books on contracts that I’ve found super helpful over the years (The Tech Contracts Handbook, A Manual of Style for Contract Drafting, Sign Here, etc.). Can anyone recommend books they’ve found helpful for L&E matters, privacy matters, product matters, or marketing/advertising matters?

I haven’t gotten a single nibble on my remote in-house applications. Are there certain states that living there would make me an automatic no? I have seen some companies list certain states you must live in and my state is never on the list. I don’t apply to those, but other descriptions don’t list states, and I do apply to those jobs.

Pet peeve having someone at the business team email Friday afternoon and asking if I'll have a turn of the documents done this afternoon because they want to send them out this afternoon even though that timeline was never communicated before!

For those of you who have successfully implemented a CLM, I’d be grateful if you could share some knowledge on how your team handles tracking of deviations from standard clauses / contract language.

In house technology/IP at Google? Does anyone work in the IP/tech trans licensing parts of google (understanding they are wide reaching and varied between products and groups). Currently in tech trans/IP in biglaw and have always thought in house google would be the dream but wanted a sanity check if that’s not the case.

Being in house and having to tell one of my business people that their past approach to something was totally against the law and they’ll need to work several times harder in the future so we stay complaint. Fun times.

What does big tech in house counsel salary look like? Is there a salary scale? Are there unspoken benefits that make it closer to big law salaries- like by stock options, 401k match, other perks?

Is “Contract Lawyer” at a tech-based trading firm a dead end job?
