Btw not advocating for lying all the time. Fair questions deserve fair answers. A potential employer asking you to notify your current employer you are looking for a job is NOT fair.

I’d consider not doing the internal transfer. Depending on when you transfer, you can get screwed on comp and certainly won’t get a bump like you would jumping to a different firm. For example if you transfer during the evaluation process, you may not be eligible for a raise. Also if you transfer prior to the Eval process and the new group gives you the raise and bonus, you need to understand how your eval will be performed considering they are completely different service lines. If you join a different group you would need to re-network the same way you would when leaving the firm.

like

You should definitely talk to your partner about the transfer and calls from the recruiters. There’s nothing more frustrating than losing a great talent because he / she wants to transfer groups / location and finds it easier to do that by leaving the firm altogether. Argh! I’m a partner and I know we would rather figure out your transfer than lose you to another firm. If you can’t get it figured out with your main partner, you should consider reaching out to others - the region managing partner or practice leader or region talent leader. Or Kelly Grier!!! Good luck!

My partner is super helpful and literally helped me transfer to a service line I have interest in. It doesn’t hurt to ask - if s/he doesn’t offer a hand to help you transfer, then you have valid reasons to go to a competitor. And I feel most partners do not want high performers go to competitor and they will help if they can. Good luck OP!

Just lie. They are asking too much. The request isn't "in good faith." Who is asking you for this request? Is it a B4 recruiter or a headhunter.

like

What do you recommend i tell the recruiter then?

Another vote for M1 here. Tell the recruiter that you have had conversations with the partner about it and leave it at that. New firm gives you an offer and you do end up just leveraging it for an internal transfer.. who cares. The prospective firm will move on 30 seconds later.

like

They’re requesting you ask to serve their interests....you need to be serving your own, and telling your current employer you are considering/planning on leaving without an offer isn’t doing that.

like

A non- answer should sufficient. If they directly ask, say, “That’s not a suggestion I’ll take up at this time.” They reached out to you. Successfully recruiting people like you is their job. You already have a job, and are clearly in demand. Don’t get power played by a rando recruiter. Always be polite, but don’t try to please and placate. It’ll get you nowhere, at least nowhere you want to be.

like

Transferring and they said it was because the other firm didn’t want to waste time giving me an offer if i was just going to use that offer as leverage to transfer internally. Should i tell me current partner i am in discussions with a competitor in the hopes that it will initiate an internal transfer?

The partner knows i have been interested in working in a different service line / location

I do not have a formal offer from the competitor and it’s in its early stages but the recruiter thought i should tell my partner ASAP

Which service line are you now and trying to go into?

Agree with M1! Can’t believe this! Have you asked about a transfer internally? Regardless, you should not mention anything unless you have an offer already. That is an unreasonable request.

A big 4 recruiter asked me, i have asked for an internal transfer. New to this whole process so I’m generally pretty honest about everything but I’m not sure if i should be

Op the recruiter could be trying to save his time. Usually what happens is that when good employees try to leave, current employer will do their best to keep good employees even if it means moving to a different department. I think the recruiter wants so see if you have initially asked internally or not. This seems stupid but the recruiter could be trying to gauge how likely is it that you will accept their offer if it comes to that.

Hi Tax Bowlers, I'm an experienced associate (2yrs) in a Big 4 Transfer Pricing division. I have reached a point in my career where I am considering taking up a professional certification. What would you guys suggest? Would it be detrimental to my career if I did not take up any certifications?
