Of course you can! Just say, “Can you please share the budgeted compensation range before we move forward? I want to make sure we’re in alignment.”
Absolutely. In fact, I almost always start out the interview process making sure the range is within what my requirements are. I would phrase it as wanting to respect their time as well in interviewing the right candidate.
