I’d give them a range starting with a high number. 150,000 - 130,000 base salary with adjustable expectations for supplemental compensation factors including, but not limited to annual bonuses, PTO, and stock options.

like

Give a range and don’t start the range any lower than you would accept. Honestly, I always see this as incompetent. If she knew what she was doing, she’d already know the market.

like

If you don't want to give them a range, don't do it. You can either ignore the question, or give some deflecting response like "I'm interested in hearing more about the position, and the potential compensation range that your firm provides for someone playing that role." Always remember that you're interviewing them as much as they're interviewing you.

like

I told a recruiter just yesterday that giving a base salary range isn’t going to happen because I needed to know the whole comp package to make a decision. But that I expect the offer to be market competitive for base. She told me the base range and other benefits.

I generally tell recruiters the range I’m willing to consider, but I won’t answer questions about my current compensation, because it’s irrelevant.

Give them a number 3x your current salary then just laugh and say “in all seriousness I’m not looking for a number, I’m looking for the right opportunity.”

I realized post-interview the recruiter might have me in the interviewer loop for the level below what I was targeting. I know I should’ve asked or they should’ve shared, but that didn’t happen. I wouldn’t accept an offer at the lower level. What should I do? Wait and see if I get an offer and negotiate, or alert them now?

Been in advertising for 12 yrs and at my agency for 4 in LA. I've been able to add to my book at current job. My chat with a big agency regarding a CD gig will likely result in an offer. The acct I'm interviewing for is more challenging, they have done a couple of award-winning work, but no long track record of it. Book pieces aren’t guaranteed. It's a promotion and a 40% salary jump. Isn't it time to start chasing a bit more money? My book is good, but no major awards. Am I making a mistake?

I want to look at options for taking advantage of the signing bonuses (to help pay down loans) before exiting.
