A senior manager sent me a text today to ask if I had sent an email last week, and if not, they would send it right now. I am on PTO today. Am I wrong to feel that was not appropriate? Why couldn’t that have waited. Is it not an acceptable boundary to expect to be left alone when on PTO? How do I properly communicate that to a level above without it coming across badly?

If you were supposed to send the email last week and forgot then you should go ahead and send it. If they’re assigning you extra work while you’re off, then don’t do it.

K2 was thinking the same thing. Why is this such a big deal? just respond that you hadn’t sent the email and let them send it. they are probably just trying to avoid duplicate emails to the client. Why so offended? Also if you are a Manager now you have a lot more responsibility to the engagement and to the audit team. Most managers end up putting in a lot of extra hours over the weekend, later evenings, and unfortunately bring their work with them when they are on vacation (whether or not they actually work) because the firms generally require managers and above to be accessible. A text message isn’t interrupting your time off. a simple reply would suffice

like

This honestly doesn’t seem bad. Especially since they said they would do it. Some things are urgent and I don’t think responding “no” to a text is too big of an inconvenience

like

Which took longer?
A) Responding to the text
B) this post

My thoughts exactly! For someone that wants to "disconnect" from work while on PTO, you went out of your way to spend a decent amount of time on fb to post/respond about a work related matter!
Send the 3 second text, grab a drink and move on.

like

This is the type of question I struggle with. The biggest selling point of our job is flexibility. Flexibility goes both ways. I want to work a 1/2 day tomorrow to play golf, great no one cares. In response, I have to send a 5 second text on PTO...

Flip the script. Have you ever answered a non‐work related yes/no question during work hours?

^this.

I am on paternity leave and get asked to join meetings or send emails (manager as well). Everyone knows I’m on leave and they just ignore it and text/email me.

It doesn’t seem unreasonable. The problem is things always come up (like a consultation) and the partners just assume you will help out. Almost like it’s a one off event that you just have to sacrifice for.

I’m not a manager but when I get a non-urgent work text on PTO I want to straight up body the person who sent it. Completely breaks the disconnect of PTO.

I’ve politely told perpetrators to not text me with non-urgent work matters while I’m on PTO after I’ve returned from said PTO. They felt uncomfortable about being confronted about it but stopped. Pretty easy convo.

My current manager asked what they were offering and if there was anything he could do to make things better where I currently am. There is no way they can match the offer, but I'm a little worried about leaving a permanent full time with benefits and vacation time. What's my best move? Ask for 20% and be happy with 10%? Aim higher?

For the record I just barely make living wage as is so it's not going to be massive jumps
