I love when people say “calm down” like it’s going to magically cure the anxiety. Calm down? Why didn’t I think of that!!?
In all seriousness OP, I’m sorry. I’d be flying off the handle bars, too. But try to remind yourself that there’s only so much that’s in your control. Whatever happens in that meeting—good or bad—is something you can get through. Fingers crossed it’s no big deal!
This happened to me and I actually did get fired. It felt like garbage in the moment but I got two paid months off and then started a great new job so all things considered worst case scenario isn’t bad so keep doin your thing. Also it’s probably not that I’ve had that happen many other times that wasn’t that.
I have been laid off, effective Monday. Two weeks severance. Thanks to those of you who suggested I reach out to my contacts. Some have expressed interest already. I’ll be ok.
Not that anyone is asking but happy to report that all of us who were laid off have landed on our feet - and as far as I know we all got raises out of it.
LBBS has since lost at least 6 other associates in the data privacy group, so, best of luck to them 😌💁🏻♀️
Good luck today and hopefully it’s not the worst case scenario.
While this won’t comfort you, this happened to me in private practice. I got an email from the practice group chair to discuss work load and walked in and it was him and the admin. partner. Complete blindside.
Thankfully that led to a great move in-house. There’s always a silver lining.
Right. It’s not a regularly scheduled performance review and there is no clue what it’s about. I could be getting fired or they’re simply just checking in but the fact that I don’t know makes it soo stressful
Good luck!! Hopefully it’s nothing but if it is firms are still hiring for laterals! I am in litigation on East Coast and am happy to help (fingers crossed you won’t though!)!
I’m half debating if I should hit up my network and all the recruiters this morning but feel like I should wait to see how it goes first. Thanks for the offer, friend, I’ll let you know if I’ll need to take you up on it 🥲
What I would give to be let go with a little bit of severance pay. One month is all I’d want, I’m not greedy. Imagine getting a month of pay and then getting a job with one of the former partners. Perfection.
On a serious note, try to keep calm because panicking won’t change the result. Hopefully everything goes well but if not, you will still be fine. Good luck!
Axiom is looking for data privacy lawyers - remote working and flexible hours are doable. Work is not guaranteed, but I think the need is currently high. Feel free to reach out if you want more info.
But also, in the event that I am actually going to get fired, there are a few former partners that I’ve stayed in touch with - How do I hit them up and test whether I’ve got an exit strategy lol
It sounds like these are layoffs (too many employees, not enough work) and not firings (for cause). Just reach out to your contacts and tell them what happened. They will understand. I went through it in 2020. I said something like "[firm] is going through a rough time, and I got hit by the layoff. I'm looking for my next step, so if you have any advice, or know someone who I should talk to, please let me know."
Also, even if you don't get laid off, look anyway. Your group is not stable.
My hours are beyond shite but the practice group as a whole has been struggling. There are def people billing more than me but also many who are billing the same or less. But this is partly why the mysterious meeting is so nerve wrecking
Would Anomaly be apologizing if there were no online outrage? Would they even apologize if the ad was never found after 12 years? The IG post felt half-assed just to cover bases tbh.

So sorry this happened to you. I hope you find your next gig in record time and you end up happier than you could’ve imagined.

Uplifting news 🥳

Not to be hyperbolic, but print out your contacts and anything personal on your comp. Print your client/conflicts list. Print any good precedents.
Even if it's worst case, you will get severance.
They just let an associate go.
Yikes that’s not fun. At least you know what’s about at least. good luck 🤞
Name and shame the firm!!!
Shit sorry to hear that. Sounds like from others on the bowls you weren’t the only one. Just remember that a layoff reflects on the firm, not you.

Sounds like you’re spazzing. Chill bro

That is not very well thought out of them even if it is a performance related meeting.

I can’t do percentages but out of the 50-60 attorneys in the group, only 6 or 7 are POCs and out of those 6 or 7, 3 were laid off today lmao
Also since some have asked - I am in data privacy/cyber in NYC but would like to remain working remotely.

My firm is hiring privacy! DM for a referral!
Your firm still hiring?? NYC civil litigator.

How are your hours? Staying busy?
