A specialist told me they prefer to be called a subject matter expert and that the word specialist is offensive. Do others feel this way?

Exactly what A3 says.

I don't really mind being called a specialist, but I have wondered how we got to the point where it's generally unethical to call yourself a specialist and that's the moniker we use for non-core corporate work.

Depends. If you call a colleague with the same practice from another jurisdiction a specialist because they do a „jurisdiction check“ to ensure that you do not have an invalid entity, I can see that people might be insulted.

Might be better to say the have a „specialist role“.

Ignore the request.

I’ve been at two firms and have never heard of Subject Matter Expert being used. I’m a specialist.

Hey mates, I have an overall experience of 14 years with 6lakh CTC. Started my career in BPO though I am from computer science background and then proved myself for the IT movement within the same company before 8 years (6 years in BPO and 8 years in IT). Nothing is changed financially but in a better role. Have got certified in GCP. I stayed here for too long because I was looking for an onshore opportunity but now luck is not favouring me in H1B lottery. Looking for your valuable suggestions!
