A teammate said several times he wishes we had a more senior engineer on the team. Gave one of the Staff Engineers as example. I can’t help but feel like I am not good enough.

You can't expect to be enough in the eyes of everyone. And you know, even if that person is more skilled than you in some way, it doesn't take away from your own abilities. There's always a bigger fish and all that. Your teammate is definitely in the wrong for not realizing they're putting you down with their worlds but it's probably not their intention.

like

Being good and having experience are different things. No matter how skilled you are as an engineer, you can't be an expert at everything, and someone who's spent years working in a particular area when you haven't will have a significant advantage even if you're equally skilled.

Part of growing in this field is understanding that there is *absolutely no shame* in not being the best at something. It's a crucial skill to know what those gaps are, both in yourself and in your team, and steer clear of them, fill them, or at least tread carefully through them. Big messes result when nobody realizes they're in over their heads.

It's also worth pointing out that even if you're the absolute best engineer on the team, there's still only one of you. It would be unwise for the team to take on any projects that only you could manage, because if you left (or got hit by a bus) there would be nobody left capable of picking it up. More experience on the team means that's less of a constraint, which benefits you.

like

It's possible your teammate is looking for additional mentoring. If it's come up more than once, grab your teammate for a coffee or lunch outing and find out what they think is missing from the team. It probably has nothing at all to do with you or your abilities, and everything to do with their insecurities. It's a good opportunity to deepen a working relationship, and find what each of you can offer the other. If you're so inclined of course! (If you can't stand the teammate in question, then your best bet is to ignore their comments outside of the immediate work to be done. :D)

Should I be pissed. I was tasked on a consulting project a few months ago. The first few weeks were fine. However all of a sudden my manager stopped communicating with me, stopped giving me any work and would send insulting emails. I tried to patch it over and go above and beyond but he has just increasingly insured that I have nothing to do all day. My work is top notch. I cant believe I have spent the past few months doing jack

** he has also insured to isolate me from the whole office

Started a new job. Met one of my coworkers and individual seemed nice. Then individual started making strange statements like “you can trust me if you want to vent” or suggesting I do questionable things since per individual “nobody cares”. Mind you I’ve only known the guy for like 2 weeks and he started making these weird comments. Found out individual didn’t get promoted and hasn’t gotten promoted to the role I’m in. Wondering if I’m overthinking or he’s after my job 🤣

Sales engineers, or any one in a Presales tech engineer role. How do you deal with a sales rep who used to be a a sales engineer? I know that is vague. I have been doing this for a while. I even dabbled in multiple sales roles at smaller companies. My issue is not agreeing with their approach at times. It could be a clash mostly in style. Might be my ego. Just wanted to a chat going. Side note. I mentor folks who are starting as SEs but sometimes the mentor needs to be the mentee.

⚠️Toxicity Alert ⚠️

My previous manager would track us by hours daily, made a fuss everytime anything stretched and guilt us for that and the unplanned leave too unless it was COVID. Hinted him a lot of time, this is problematic but apparently he considered it "standard practice for agile".

Now 8/10 teammates have switched within < 1 year of project start (6-7 months with him) which tbh had good work in our opinion and even team was fun to work with even though none of us ever met in person.

Hi all! I was asked coordinate a local happy hour for my team. The issue I’m having is that I’m currently pregnant and am not sure if I’m comfortable to hang out with strangers. What’s the most professional way to say no without hurting feelings / burning bridges? Or should I suck it up and go?

Stanford Health Care CEO sent managers only a $5 Starbucks gift card as a holiday gift. Personally I thought it was a joke, or at least totally out of touch. What are your experiences being given an end of year gift at work? Is this an insult or should I be thankful?

Just going to rant a bit… What’s really an account director’s role? ADs in my company create confusion in trying to insert themselves into the conversation, they don’t understand management consulting and confuse clients, they fake having relationships with key decision makers, often misread the company politics/camps and then try to justify their failures by trying to gaslight us into thinking we were either too expensive for the Client or didn’t do a great job on prior engagements or some BS!

Junior Dev presents an issue they’re having. I hint to the fact that it may be framework related (this is a very simple fix). The questions they are asking seem out of context, so I ask if they have done any framework related research generally, as our entire application is built on top of this. They answered no, they have been here for months, and it’s not like this wasn’t in the job description. Am I missing something here? Trying to be helpful but stuff like this is frustrating.

Remote vs in person for software developers in their early career. I started my career in 2021 fully remote. After the office opened again in 2022, I was able to learn a lot about the system from other people in the office and solve bugs faster. Without a doubt made my job easier. Lots of my colleagues still work from home in 2022. I can’t see why they are making it harder for themselves on purpose. I’m fairly confident they can afford to get to the office because they have teslas and shit.
