A US resident on a Green Card can apply for unemployment benefits. However will this hurt his chance of getting his citizenship? Don’t need an opinion interested only in the facts. Please advice.

Unemployment benefit is an insurance that you pay premiums to from your every paycheck . Are you guilty of claims with gieco on auto accident? Unemployment benefit is not free hand out, its paid for by you during employment for when you need it. Trump says BS to wild up his bigot base. I would not worry about Trump or the bigots.

Don't you pay insurance premium for it? I am from Canada. They cut unemployment insurance premium from my pay cheque bi-weekly. If you are paying a premium, that's your right.

Any PR (GC holder) or Citizen can avail unemployment benefits. Don’t let anyone say you otherwise

like

No it is not supposed to hurt your chances at all. However, I'm sure you're thinking of the news these last fees of the current administration trying to make that a factor.

Yes.

I don’t think it hurts you chances of citizenship when I spoke to my lawyer. I think the question is, if unemployment benefits is a public charge or not. I believe under current USCIS guidance, unemployment isn’t a public charge (things like Medicaid is). So you’ll be fine, but I’d recommend consulting with your lawyer you intend to use to apply for citizenship prior to applying for it

unemployment is not govt assistance. what they refer to is food stamps, medicaid, etc.

With the current administration, everything is possible. A quick executive order one day may say you cannot sustain yourself as a resident so why provide a citizenship. That said, you should apply of course as it is your right.

This is news to me. Thought unemployment benefits were only for citizens.

The illegals pay ssn taxes but do not reap the benefit of ssn tax so that unclaimed ssn tax helps American citizens.

So one can apply for unemployment only after the severance biweekly payout ends?
