A year ago a plumber came to my parents’ house, and told us that it would cost us (something like) $175 an hour for a guy to dig down to the main drain line in our front yard. Just to dig.

A year ago a lawyer told me it would cost something like $750 an hour for a guy to read a boilerplate agreement. Just to read.

There is a huge difference in overhead between the two situations.

Tell him you want a fixed-fee proposal, based on any and all assumptions he has regarding on your garden as of execution of the agreement. Also ask for a 10% discount for their hourly rate since you’re being oh so kind to give them business. And tell him you will only pay for the main plumber’s time, not for his assistants’, and that $175 should also cover all the tools and material to get the plumbing done.

Sure if my firm were billing me out at $750/hr I wouldn’t have remembered this interaction.

I definitely feel like student engagement is low in the virtual realm. Any suggestions would be great.

A different kind of working mom post:

Many of you have young kids... are there any moms of teens here?

I am at a point where my teen's newfound "independence" is starting to impact my focus and time at work - his running off to hang with friends without permission, etc is becoming a distraction during the workday, and the impact has definitely been noticed by my superiors at work.

The issues with the kid are being handled appropriately - this is more about how to overcome perception at work
