A year into a promotion without a raise to match. I've tried everything short of going full-Karen on HR. Other than the principle of the matter, I don't want to leave. Has anyone else has success navigating this BS? Is anyone else still hearing Covid as an excuse to raise freezes?

If you're doing great there and not getting paid accordingly, talk to recruiters now, and see what you can get. Have conversations. You might be surprised. No one will look out for your wallet as well as you will. The secret of jobs in general is that most people move up much easier and faster in their careers by switching up companies every so often.

Its still pretty tough out there. I mean work is getting made again but it doesnt mean clients dont nickel and dime everything. Personally I think we’re still in “just happy to have a job” times. They probably wanted to do something to show you were appreciated, so you got the title—but I imagine you got the standard “we’ll see” when it comes to a bump. If you genuinely, generally like it there, you’re very lucky indeed. My advice is bring it up once a month so they dont think you forgot. But dont expect big changes while theyre trying to figure out if they can even/need to afford rent anymore.

BBDO is pretty notorious for this. Covid or not.

Be loud. Ask often, far more often than monthly. Ask how they bill clients and what rate they are billing you out at. Ask when raises and salary adjustments are scheduled. Ask if yours will account for the year in the job. Ask what level you are in the system (I’ve seen people given the title but the system never officially changed them so they aren’t showing up anywhere as in that position as long as they have been). And document every conversation with an email follow up. Don’t be shy on saying things in writing like - being in a position not being compensated but billing a client. Good luck.

like

What percentage of what you charge your client should an operator get? A contract lawyer told me companies usually aim up to 33 percent of what they are billing, but I don’t make Close to that yet.

Sometimes you have to force their hand with an offer letter to match. The only caveat is, you should be prepared to accept the external offer if your current employer refuses to match.

That happened to me at an Omnicom shop. I quit over it. I should of quit way earlier.

If it’s been a year you are clearly not a priority to the organization, no matter how well you think you are doing. Sadly, the only way to get that raise may be at another shop. If you keep pressing the matter, you should be prepared for it to backfire or at least go sideways, and for you to be pegged as an entitled troublemaker. I don’t see it that way but have been part of way too many conversations about compensation so am well aware of how management looks at situations like this. Especially at a big agency like BBDO. To them, everyone is a number on a spreadsheet and easily replaceable. Just remember no company or manager will ever look out for you like you look out for yourself. If a higher salary is a priority for you right now, start looking. You may be surprised by what you find out there. I don’t know specifically how BBDO is doing but agencies have for the most part bounced back and cannot hire fast enough.

Well if you're going to work without a raise can't really blame them for not giving you one. Sounds like they've provided some other reason besides money for you to stick around, and you've accepted it, even if not explicitly. This is a transactional relationship and they'll take whatever you give.

@SVP1 Of course there's nuance but I don't know OPs situation in detail so "Company's take what you give them" is a good rule of thumb.

HR has very little to do with you getting a raise to go with the promotion. This is finance and upper management

For me, it was getting the counter offer that got me the raise, but you have to be prepared to leave if they can’t match. Thankfully, they matched and gave more. If they match or don’t match, that kind of shows where you stand.

Or will we never mandate vaccines in lieu of personal freedom?

As I prepared to file my notice, the partner of the firm called me and asked me to stay. They’re willing to promote me mid year in December and increase salary next year in August. The current offer I have gives 60% pay increase and Partner still can’t match that offer after promotion. Firm leadership says here I have potential to be a partner in 8 years and talk about all the leadership support I have rn which is fair. Is this one of their tactics to make me stay or should I just leave…

What's the point of constantly trying to climb the ladder and wanting "more"? Does anyone feel content around here? I used to put a lot of pressure on myself and would always have short/long term goals mapped out. I hit a financial goal this year - make at least 6 figures in base pay. I live in a MCOL area and it's plenty for me to live on. With bonuses and annual raises, even if I never get promoted again, I'd be good. Is it bad that I want to just be happy and focus on my personal life?
