Acting senior here—it is really, really hard to give tasks to someone when you don’t know their competence level, it needs to get done quickly, and you don’t have a ton of time to explain things. The mindless tasks feel pointless, but ultimately it’s usually stuff that needs to be done but would be the straw that broke the senior’s back. It doesn’t say anything about you as an employee, and you will get more tasks, but functionally you are about the same level as an intern right now when you factor in company-specific knowledge. The new hire below me is incredibly smart, but I don’t have time to explain complexities of revenue to her right now when I know I’ll just have to go back and redo her work later.
Basically, don’t be concerned and it will get better. Even if the tasks feel stupid, focus on doing them correctly and timely, and check in to ask for more tasks about once a day, or when you finish tasks. In the mean time, enjoy the slow times, because you’ll be drowning in work soon.
Thank you for the kind words, I really appreciate it! I’ve felt as though I’m failing my associate over the last few days in particular, but I just keep reminding myself that we’re all doing the best we can and those opportunities to learn will come more frequently soon.
Take this time to work on yourself personally before everything hits the fan and you haven’t slept, worked out, or hung out with friends. You will be overwhelmed with a ton of info to learn soon enough
Take advantage of this time while you can. This is extremely normal - savor it.
This is pretty normal. Until you get given the chance to “step up” and take over a seniors work.
Enjoy it while it lasts…
Sounds normal
I envy you
I miss the days of doing nothing and having no responsibilities….
