Anyone know of someone trying to break into BigLaw after failing the bar? I mentor a young woman who just found out she failed late last week. Her 1L grades were low (improved 2L yr) so missed out on OCI. She has a pretty good reason for failing the bar as she had a newborn baby in late June. Any advice? Do you think focusing on the bar then trying to get a job with a regional firm and lateraling is the only way? Or do you think she could get a job right out of gate? She wants to do corporate.
BONUS SEASON! Now that I have your attention, I’m a Big Law baby. I joined a BL firm in March, so I haven’t lived through year-end bonuses before. Is there a predictable timeline for expecting bonus announcements? Do most firms give a set bonus per class year, or is it traditionally more discretionary? I would imagine that giving each associate a discretionary bonus would be too time-intensive, but what do I know. (Also, any inside scoops?) In the words of Cousin Greg, muchly appreciated.
Any women suffer from extreme hair loss? I’m indian, and have had hair fall since I was a kid. Now it’s pretty bad though, my scalp has started showing and it sucks :( Any stories from others?
Microsoft 🐟 I’m joining soon and curious to know about the parental leave policy. Are you able to take leave within a year of your start date/is there a waiting period before becoming eligible for the leave? Thanks in advance!
I am moving from USDC Lake Mary to Gilbert early next year. I am looking to buy a home there within few months of moving there. Things I am looking for are a good school district (kid will start school next year) and possibly some Indian population. Any recommendations?
Parent 🐠, are your kids’ schools providing any relief on tuition? Ours said they will not be providing any so wanted to get a sense on what others are hearing.
Moving to San Diego in the spring from the central coast. Any recs on places to live (late 30’s with a kid)? Want to be close to restaurants and things to do, but a little too old and tired for gas lamp!
Has anyone ever had more than one miscarriage in a row and gone on to have a healthy pregnancy? I get pregnant easily and all tests are normal so I'm told it's 'bad luck' and 'keep trying'. 🙁
I hate when “Instagram models” try to follow me and ask me to subscribe to their only fans. I am a newly married man with a child….
What do you do with your free time over the weekend? I recently quit consulting to get a job with a standard schedule. I don’t have kid care or dating needs, tapped out on plants, home remodeling, drinking and eating out. Looking for other ways to make the weekends fun. Please share how you spend your weekends! 😀
Why exactly is the lateral market so hot? More deals going on? People leaving big law completely? More people taking parental leave? A mix of these things?
I feel very lost. I just started as an associate at a big firm this year and have a one year old son. Learning how to be a mom and an associate has been extremely tough and I have felt burnt out on multiple occasions this year. Prior to having a child, I was a very determined individual and was used to saying yes to almost everything because I wanted to accomplish those things. Nowadays I feel like I don’t care about my job as much and being away from him gets more and more difficult.
I'm contemplating having a kid every year just to get the maternity leave. 6 kids is probably worth not working a quarter of the year.
The only thing I'll be waving is your decapitated head on a stick in front of your weeping mother!
I recently had a miscarriage but I didn't know I was pregnant should I tell my boyfriend I don't want him to think I'm broken so I don't know. We've been together for 3 years and he is an awesome guy but I haven't been able to have sex with him lately because I'm not ready and the doctor said to take some time... he thinks that I'm rejecting him but I don't know if I should tell him what I'm going through. Its been three weeks. And I was five weeks.
I use my lunch hour to pick my kids up from school but one day my boss tried to put an impromptu meeting on at that time and I mentioned it wasn’t a good time for me as I’m in the middle of child hand-off during my lunch time and don’t have aftercare reopened yet. She immediately responded that I have to have that in my contract and to put it on my entire team’s calendar. I don’t see that as necessary since my kids are older middle school/high school. Is that legal to mandate it be contractual.
I'm in the best relationship I've been in. We had a chat about life goals and long term plans. We align on everything except children. He definitely wants them and I am undecided. I had a childhood that makes me terrified of being a mother. To be clear I get on with children, have taught in primary school and volunteered in orphanages. I am very caring and take great care of a dog. I'm just afraid of the role of motherhood and that my needs will disappear. Anyone have advice?
Deloitte is giving 16 weeks of paid leave to employee (male and female) for birth of a child, immediate family care, and care if aging parents. Pretty nice benefit.
So my husband recently became a share partner at a firm, which is a bit stressful for us because (i) it’s a big transition and a lot of stress for him and (ii) they are pressuring him to move to NYC (we are based in TX where most of my family live). Anyways, we are planning to have kids, and I’m worried that if we move and have a child that I will alone, also working in biglaw and raising the child alone without help. Anyways, I was wondering other women’s thoughts, experiences and advice.
Help- i recently found out im 5 weeks pregnant which means my due date would be sometime next june. My BFFs wedding is the same month 🥴. Hi Guys, i am planning to shif my career into different technology as i dont have relevant project experience on that technology, is learning technology is sufficient to manage in IT industry? Please suggest Thanks.
Booz Allen Hamilton rescinded my offer because my current firm will not waive the non-compete clause in our employee agreement. It was allegedly a capability hire, and not tied to a particular project. I work one level above entry level, and really shouldn’t even have such a restrictive non-compete. I’ve already resigned, and would prefer to be unemployed rather than continue working here. • MPH, Secret clearance, 3 YOE in govt consulting (Military Health), Deloitte Alum

What is a typical signing bonus when starting a new director level role? Does this vary by country or generally an accepted thing across the globe?
For every one concerned that the Covid vaccine manufacturers are protected to some point against lawsuits until 2024, that is true. It is due to the PREP Act. However Covid is not the first time it was activated. There have been quite a few since 2005 when it was enacted. There are some still in effect for smallpox, zika and anthrax for example. https://www.phe.gov/Preparedness/legal/prepact/Pages/default.aspx
Has anyone transitioned from Deloitte to McKinsey as a non-MBA masters? How did you make the transition? How is the culture different? What are the pros/cons?
Have a TS and in the reserves. Finally coming to grips I may have some mental health challenges...could I loose my TS if I see someone/am diagnosed?
Did you all consider other, more academically focused masters degrees? If so, why did you choose an MBA instead?
Has anyone jumped from Big 4 Advisory to Tier 1 Consulting firms (e.g. MBB). Was the jump at the same, higher or lower level?
Can H1B approved under consular processing but yet to be activated be transferred to another employer and can the new employer apply for transfer and change of status?
Ever had an attorney randomly pull food that they somehow squished in their shoe during long court days. One day, it was taking forever in federal court due to the COVID backlog. An attorney was sitting at a table across from where I was sitting. Kept noticing him reaching down like he was scratching his foot then would bring his hand to his mouth. Very strange. Court concluded and I saw him by his car taking off his shoe and pulling a squished baggy with half a sandwich out of it.
I got promoted recently which has been nice, but I’m struggling to get expectations of what they expect at this next level, any tips?
Hello fishies! Curious to know everyone’s experience with networking during a transition. When chatting with someone who is trying to pivot into a new role, do you find that they often withhold saying anything negative or potential conflicts/challenges about the team dynamic or role itself. Do you find yourself doing this? If so, why? It seems like only benefits the employer and keeps employees in a perpetual state of discomfort. Thanks
Are you still working remotely or have you gone back to traveling to client sites? Is it frustrating traveling to be on site when key client resources are remote several days a week?
Should I keep applying or give up? I graduated from a mediocre law school 10 years ago (cum laude) and have a tax llm from a good school but mediocre grades(3.1) . I am licensed. I work in public accounting and am at one of the large firms. I do tax controversy, writing, research, international. I applied for tax law firm job over the years - rejected. I interviewed with a small firm today - it's an intellectual step down - I can't do that. Big law still an option or stop disappointing myself?
I have an interview with Accenture for SAP and Salesforce functional role. I was wondering if there’s any tips you guys can provide on how to ace the interview. I’m coming from a very govt focused consulting firm and looking to transition but don’t have a lot of experience in SAP or Salesforce and could use some pointers.
With the annual review requirement for RIA, does your firm use 365-day standard, or calendar year?
