About to discuss offer for a secondment abroad. Is there usually room for comp negotiation on these assignments?

Also make are you address with them who will prepare your taxes. This should be standard, but if they don't have it you need to check. Also discuss tax equalization. Make sure that is included.

Wow, sweet assignment. Have fun.

Everything can be negotiated. If they don't budge on comp go for a higher housing allowance so you can live large(r).

A little bit. Do not accept less than 1 month in a hotel if this is a long-term secondment. Finding permanent housing in a foreign country when you are brand new takes a long time. I was nearly homeless on my secondment because they only gave me two weeks in a hotel

Everything is negotiable. They may say no, but you can't know until you ask.

Since I don't know what your figures are I will share what I had: in the US as a senior I was making maybe $56k. Moved to Australia and was at $66kAUD which at the time was a 1:1 exchange rate. I thought it was young to be impossible, my rent doubled moving to Australia ($600 a mth in denver to $1200 a month in Australia). However, because of special tax concessions that existed at the time that I knew nothing about before I went, nearly half of my income was exempted from tax. That put me in a low income tax bracket and I was even receiving "low income refundable tax credits" as a result (free money that was never mine like the US earned income credit). I was saving money not having a car. I traveled all over that damn country in one year, to the point that after 12 months I had done/seen 25% of the stuff to do/ see in Australia before you die (top 100 lists that pop culture websites publish every year). Best year of my life. Even while traveling, I was saving shit tons of money (bc so much tax free!) that I came home with $15,000 in my bank account that I didn't have when I got there. So, I would recommend doing a ton of research on the area. I'm making $165k USD right now and I just accepted a job in Dublin Ireland making $85k USD. That's a massive cut. But it is worth it.

PwC2- what level were you while on secondment? I just talked to them and the offer is really not attractive at all. I'd really like the experience and all but not sure if I can justify the comp. I get cost of living is significantly lower but I don't think I'd even be able to travel down there based on this offer. Sad day 😑

What did they offer? I was a senior associate when I moved to Australia from Denver Colorado

^Is it a long term secondment? What you're likely going to find on long term secondments is that they give you an offer in line with the market. The Brazilians likely get paid much lower than their US counterparts, so that's why you're seeing such a large discrepancy.

I was there 2 years and I was paid by the local firm. I'm in tax.

Reaction Icon Like
Arrow Icon

Ya that's because Brazil is such a low cost market. Surely your offer is at the level for Brazilian employees. Consider going to a European country where the market is better and you'll see higher salaries.

Got a verbal offer from GS to join their compliance division. Mid VP role for 180k base / 85k non prorated bonus that’ll be given fully in Jan. Need some help to evaluate if I’m being low balled. From my research this seems to be 1st year VP comp at Goldman. I’m coming with 16+ years of total experience with 13+ years in financial industry.

My salary is $58,000 right now. Evaluations are coming up. If I don’t get a raise to a minimum of $60,000 what should I do? I enjoy the work environment here. Me and two others were the first “younger” generation to be at this firm and worked hard to develop a team culture. Would hate to leave it to get paid $2,000 but my husband and I have financial goals we want to meet. Also, I don’t have a CPA license yet.
