Consulting

About to live with a roommate. I never watch TV so I suggested an Internet only plan, my roommate is there roughly 6 nights a month and wants to get the TV + internet bundle for double the cost (cont)

yes. making such a request makes you seem like a cheap person. you are putting your roommate in an awkward position. what if he’s watching TV and you walk in the room? do you now have to leave, since you aren’t paying for the TV? certainly, he’s paying for it and entitled to use it, and you’re not, so... leave the living room? this is something that probably should have been discussed in advance, and you’re effectively putting that entire burden on them when it’s you who has the issue.

if you had discussed and agreed upon something else previously, that’s an entirely different situation. still, for the sake of the relationship, i would probably contribute and try to get some value out of it by finding something on TV i might like. or maybe you can negotiate something out of them that you want that they are less inclined to do (larger bedroom/bathroom, etc).

Update: I just spoke with the roommate and the total cost went from $34/month to $74/month. I told him I’d be happy to split if that’s still the assumption, he was understanding and said I only have to pay for the internet portion. Thanks everyone for your suggestions. Both sides had compelling points. Happy Sunday!

Suggest doing internet-only for a month or two, and agree to re-evaluate later if they really miss having cable. It’s really easy to upgrade (and they usually give you a better deal if they think they can upsell anyway)

Op: be generous with buying toilet paper and cleaning supplies, and cook dinner once in a while and share and you’ll be good. Give without asking, and it will lead to positivity in your home.

Noted. Being generous and setting boundaries when necessary. Gotta do both!

Am I being unreasonable if I suggest to pay for less than half of the total bill, instead of splitting 50/50?

OP it kinda depends on the relationship you have with that person. If it’s someone you know or are friends with or someone you found online and don’t plan on hanging out with. Like with me and my friends or family. We don’t break things up that evenly. Most likely, we would still split that bill down the middle and perhaps (if they were able) they’d pick up an extra couple dinners/groceries for me without asking me to pay them back. Lunch or dinner with some of my coworkers we’ll just do separate checks (if we’re not expensing it lol). However, if you can’t afford it or it’ll make you unhappy that you’re paying for something you shouldn’t be, then let them know. You don’t want that eating you up inside man. I get it. I have a sister that can be really detailed on dividing up expenses for Christmas, yet she’ll buy dinner for 30 family members and not even ask for a dime lol
