Congrats! Sounds like you’re definitely making the right choice.

My former boss tried to gaslight me in very similar ways when I resigned to join a competitor. He told me that I was demoting myself and would just be a number at my new employer. In the year and half since joining the competitor, I’ve been promoted twice, now hold a title two levels above old job, and have more than doubled my base salary. My old boss was wrong in every way and yours is too.

Wow...well, then you could simply have told him that you appreciate him making it even more clear that this was the correct move.
I made a similar move last summer. I switched to a different, but similar role, with a bit more responsibility and more growth potential, and my boss, well, didn't want me to go, but at the same time was super supportive and proud of me for being able to land that job. Salary increase was more like a 30% bump, not nearly what you got, but a good boss wants to see his people progress.
You made the right move even if there hadn't been any pay increase.
He/she sounds more like a jilted ex-lover than a manager. You should send the conversation to his HR department for the inevitable toxic workplace conversation that someone else is going to have.

The resentment means you were doing a good job and it’s going to be hard to find someone like you.

Glad you got away from that crappy former boss and that you are getting paid so much more👏🏼

Isn’t it satisfying to get that kind of confirmation that you are making SUCH a good choice by leaving?!

They are hurt you are leaving and are trying to hurt you back. Very classless. But bet you aren’t regretting your decision now!

And this is why you leave the company because the manager is disrespectful. Make sure you bring this up in your exit interview.

What a childish behavior. If anything they should apologize for not paying you properly 🙂

I say this often “When you have haters, it usually means you’re doing something right!”
Your boss is acknowledging they are loosing that person who made them look good to their manager and you are now probably making more money than they are. Congrats to you!

Not sure if you'd want to answer this question, but what made you want to leave your company? And if it was salary, what if in the recent year the company gave you a big raise (12-20%)? Would you have stayed or still left for a better/higher paying job?

I'm wondering about all the above because I'm curious about what a company should do to ensure that their talented employees stay and don't pursue another opportunity, especially if it's mainly for salary/TC.

@Manager 2 Whenever recruiters/hiring managers disparage job hoppers, I can't help but think of how shortsighted they are. If it isn't because they're miserable, people change jobs because they're GUNNERS who know their worth and the value they have to add to a company. I've got a resume with only 3 companies in 13 years (if you don't include my company recently being acquired as #4, anyway. I'm still in the same role, so I'm not counting it as a 4th), but in my first 2 roles, I stuck around WELL past my expiration date. I would get bored, and my performance would suffer due to my boredom, so I got laid off. But if I was bored, why didn't I find a new job, you ask? Simple. I'm lazy, and I like comfort. So any hiring manager who would choose to pick me with 3 companies over someone who's been at, let's say, 7 companies in the last 14 years is not necessarily making a better choice, quality-wise.

Haha well shows you exactly why you’re leaving!

Thank god you are getting away from the toxic claws of that piece of work!

Thank you everyone. I’m very excited for my next opportunity. I gave my ALL for 4 years to this company. It was a really tough decision but as pointed out, my decision was completely confirmed by his reaction.

Classic insecure bully behavior. Good for you!

We've all had that boss before. Just take the high road and smile as you exit. When they go to hire your replacement they will see what the market has become. Congrats on the new job!

For those of you who interviewed at a start-up, how do you calculate an equity % you would want during negotiations as a "tipping point" to make the leap? What I am considering is calculating the total amount I invest in "high risk" stock today and using that as my floor to translate to a company's share values, then the base/bonus needs to equate or exceed what I live on today. To be clear, I am not currently in an interview round, I'm attempting to formulate a logical game-plan.
