Accepted to NYU for a tax LLM, currently working for a big-ish private wealth law firm in their tax department. Firm won’t pay for any of the LLM, but I feel it’s possible to go part-time and still meet my low billable target. Thoughts/feedback?

I’ve never heard of the investment really being worth it if you’ve already landed a tax job.

I did it part time because I wanted to move overseas, which I did. But I went to nyu as a JD and only had to don12 credits since I could count 12 from my JD towards the LLM.

What’s your JD from? If not T14 I’d donit

Do it

I did it part time while working and paid for it myself. Wasn’t too bad before we had children. Then it became overwhelming and a burden. I would not have landed my current job without it though so take that for what it’s worth.

Makes sense. Speaking to your last point, the best advice I have received thus far has been “right now you’re a lawyer at a tax firm, but after you get the LLM you’ll be a tax lawyer at a tax firm”

like

What are your career goals? What do you expect to achieve having done the tax LLM? I have a tax LLM and work in biglaw tax. I find that not all firms value the tax LLM that much. However, I get the impression that it may help for going in-house. As an aside, you should be able to deduct the cost of the LLM.

You can’t deduct the cost post TCJA until the suspension for deductions for unreimbursed employee expenses sunsets.

Going part time while working will result in your grades suffering. If your current employer pays for the LLM and you want to stay employed there, attend part time. If you want to move to big law, big 4, or your current firm won’t pay tuition, then take leave and register full time. First semester grades are like 1L. Interview in spring and working by June.

In NYC small firm, ex big law folks, no billable hours, niche practice area, appearance of forwarded thinking firm, remote till who knows when, emphasis on pro bono initiatives and building book of business. The catch salary. Was making around 140k at last firm with 1800 billable. Offer is 85k and revist to bump to around 100k in several months after review (plus discretionary bonus)
