Great question. This is very unfair. The bonus or variable is based on the "past performance" and not as a bribe for the future performance so we're entitled to it no matter what. I don't think this sort of practice is professional too and not mentioned in any contracts.

I feel you. At one of my companies, I received a yearly hike of a certain amount that shall be payable QUARTERLY. So whatever quarter I decided to resign for whatever reasons, I missed out the rest of my hiked payouts. The worst part is them playing games with their own employees and offering like 50-80% hikes to a new one. How's that even cost effective, really? A non-payment during NP is undignified. But can we really challenge an offer letter? And to what extent? We'll just get answers like okay there's someone else who'll accept it no matter what. 'Cause most employees are unaware of the clauses and go simply by the rules.

Don't be bullied by your local HR contact. Write an email to your global HR head keeping few other HR senior management people in your email. They will respond. If you need draft email, please DM me.

Do you really think HR has so much power? In most of the cases, they just follow orders from the business as they neither pay your salary or are accountable for your performance.

@manager1 : In my reply if you read it then I m pointing out business and not the HR. Also, I feel Manager has to communicate that the employee who is leaving after serving np was part of last year cycle and should be eligible for hike or variable pay. *Provided : evaluation and ratings are already been communicated.
