When the decision was made to abandon resource classrooms and mainstream students into regular classrooms, this is the result. I’ve had students who required us to clear the classroom if their behavior became violent. So let’s think about this: the PLAN that was in place required disrupting an entire classroom of children’s education for the sake of an individual child.

Not all districts function this way. In my district we do have a selection of cross-categorical center program for all grade levels. We also have ASD and CI specific center programs for all ages/grades- up until age 26.

Georgia ES1- please do not put off attending to your own medical needs. If you are not taking care of yourself, you really aren’t at your best for your kiddos, and your delay may prove a worse medical outcome for you. Schedule your surgery! I’m currently off due to joint surgery (Jan 4th). I had to do it. I’m just relieved I was able to get it done as they were canceling out pt surgeries due to Covid in past weeks. Good luck to you!
I àgree.... Every year I am given those students with extreme explosive behaviors. I have two of those students this year in my class, because the other teachers on my team "can not handle" them... I had several health issues to arrive this year and asked them to get me more help... They gave me a para that has no experience and don't redirect the students until I say something. My doctor suggested me take off this month, because of the heart issue and the constant swollen with left foot. I am scheduled to have a surgery and get putting it off, so that my classroom wouldn't be totally destroyed. It's very stressful. Admin just over look those things. They send students right back after 5 minutes. And I am just tired of that at this point. I have 22 students in my class and 3 of them that recieve special services and the sped teacher has been on leave since October. It's unreal how crazy things has been this year. I thought about going on leave for the rest of the year. My body is really going through something and I don't think I have the energy to finish the year out. I pray I can, but I don't know at this point.
That's great to know....

Is PublicEd really equipped to deal with many of our contemporary issues? I think not. During this pandemic in particular, I see it as serving as type of physical “safe house”. I am not yet sure exactly how this is used, defined, or measured. There are many implications.
I bet every election you vote for politicians who implement policies that cause this to happen. Then blame it on the people who can do nothing based on the people you voted for.
All children have the right to an education. In a class with extreme disruption no children receive the education the system seeks to provide including the disruptive student. Perhaps administration (and parents) should seek a learning situation where the disruptive student can receive the appropriate education.
GO ON RECORD in every meeting that X is a safety threat to other strudents...KEEP GOING ON RECORD...yeah there may well be repercussions...document them and KEEP GOING ON RECORD. We either FIGHT FOR OUR STUDENTS or we are part of the problem. Yeah I know it can be scary but DO THE HARD THINGS.
In some schools, that is definitely the case. It's not at the school where I work, but it was at the local public school where my kids attend. We had to pull them out and put them in private school. So glad the school I work at is different. I wouldn't keep teaching if it wasn't.
