If you have no specific breed that you have strong preferences for, I’d recommend adopting a younger dog! I think most people get hung up on adopting dogs because they think they’ll have a bunch of behavioral problems but if you get them before they’re 1-2 years old, you can pretty easily train away any issues. Shelters have plenty of puppies, I adopted a 4 month old about a year ago and he’s an angel.

Dog psychology says that there are critical periods of development for specific dog reactions. Fear is the 8th week, so if they get very scared by something that could be fear they carry their whole life. Also, socialization is key during the first 12 weeks. Dogs that aren’t around humans can have difficult interactions / find it hard to adjust (particularly during 5-7 weeks) and it’s really important in ensuring the pup isn’t aggressive later in life. There is a second socialization period around 8 months I believe. Anyway, the point is to say that if you adopt an older dog, you need to understand that these formative experiences are just that, and you might inherit problems that aren’t obvious when he’s 1-2 years of age but show up down the line. I’m all for adopting, but I’ve seen people give dogs back for these reasons so make sure you are well informed.

Adopting is great, unless you end up with a dog that has serious issues. My roommate adopted a puppy that had severe anxiety & eventually had to give him away bc he couldn’t be around other people. My husband & I got a corgi from a breeder & it was the best decision we ever made. Reputable breeders breed for temperament, make sure they’re not breeding dogs with genetic diseases, etc.

Breeder means nothing. They can actually produce dogs that have more genetic issues than a mixed breed dog. My neighbor has a Swiss mountain dog that she got from a very reputable breeder. The dog cannot eat dog food since beef, chicken and pork will practically kill him (I think it’s kidney related, and he can’t have fats or something like that). So she has emu meat shipped every week from Texas. He can’t eat regular dog treats, people food, etc. A truly amazing and sweet dog, but it’s a nightmare.

While a lot of people will shame you for buying - there a re pros and cons. Adoption is wonderful. But it has its risks. 6 years ago my wife picked out a beautiful black puppy which looked like a lab and Dane mix of some sort. Everything was great for 3 months. We were in love with Taffy. And then one day he didn't wake up in the morning. Doctors told us he had a congenital heart defect probably from reckless breeding. It was the hardest 3 months to forget in our lives. Then there are behavioral issues, especially if you don't adopt young. As first time puppy parents weigh your pros and cons. But don't be Shamed away from what you feel works for you. Reputed breeders can give you a healthy life long companion.

Id usually lean toward adoption but it also depends on the breed. If you end up breeder, do your research and ensure they are reputable and humanely raising the pups.

Adopt unless you’re looking for a specific breed. Even then try to adopt if you can.

There are many breed specific rescues as well. 👍

Personally I buy from a breeder. I’m very picky about what breed I want, and won’t find them at an adoption center

M1 I’m interested in maltipoo puppies. Never saw one at an adoption center for the 5 years I was looking for puppies, until I just decided to buy from a breeder. Definitely not apologizing for wanting only 1 type of dog breed

I think the case for adoption depends on the type of dog you want. My experience with adoption was very negative and we ended up buying a dog. I needed to get a hypoallergenic dog and they are in big demand. When we went to some adoption places, they told us to “show up within 15 minutes of the start of the event or the dogs you want will be gone.” And the adoption fee for such a dog was $1500! Many hypoallergenic dogs from the sound of it were just puppies from a breeder that were not bought within 12 weeks. All of that just sounded just crazy for us and we ended up buying a dog.

Get a dog that you will love, then neuter/spay it. Adopting doesn't solve strays, it saves one dog. Neutering reduces strays. If you don't have a preference of breed, explore adopting.

Maybe you should just lay off the absolutes, there are scenarios where what you're saying isn't true. Generally, yes, a rescue dog will already be snipped. You're dismissing scenarios where a dog is a relatively new pickup and hasn't had time for the procedure, too young, or simply in an over-populated shelter that doesn't have the money. Plenty of shelters require that the adopter get the dog snipped if it hasn't been already. You're also dismissing the many ways in which someone can adopt a dog, such as re-homing. The point is to make sure the dog is snipped, doesn't matter if you do it or it's already been done.

Hey mommas - My baby is 14 weeks old and I haven't gotten my period back yet. I'm worried I'm pregnant again. When did you get your period back? For context, I'm breastfeeding but not exclusively (I am pumping and nursing as much as I can though). I've been on the pill since 6 weeks and my husband used condoms for the first few weeks once we started again. Surprisingly, I can't find anything online that's helpful. Any sense of a timeframe would be tremendously anxiety-reducing!

16 weeks and so worried all of the stress I’m under is going to hurt the baby. Between work, my own scary (non-pregnancy) health stuff, the pandemic, my mom (who is a widow and lives alone, basically isolated by choice due to covid) is having health issues, and pressures to keep billable hours up, I’ve been having complete breakdowns. Today I spent almost the entire day crying and now have to make up the billable time this weekend. I really worry abt what effect this will have on the babe.
