ADs/designers: Is a graphic design certificate enough to start a career as an AD? I’m between programs at SVA/PRATT/Parsons and a 9month boot camp program called Shillington. Thoughts on any of these?

It’s way less about certificates and degrees and more about what you’ve got in your portfolio. First, your portfolio should reflect the kind of work you want to be doing. Second is networking... get out there and meet people who have the jobs you want. And third, degrees and certificates, but if you nail the first two, I don’t really know that you need these. Education and classes should be a fast-track means of helping you accomplish the first two, not to get a piece of paper.

So you’re choosing between getting degrees and a boot camp? Boot camps are great for a single intensive skill set, like basic coding or After Effects it Cinema 4D, But not for the full extent of knowledge needed to become an art director. I’d say if you’re looking to become an AD the skill set required is insanely intensive, and if you want the chance to jump right into good opportunities you’ll want a four year degree. I’m at a top agency and we don’t really have anyone from portfolio schools. We have people with Associate’s, but they REALLY know their stuff about the ins and outs of software and other important technical knowledge and have insane talent that shows they didn’t need a degree to get there. But that takes a lot of self-teaching and insanely hard work most people aren’t equipped for. The skill set required to be an AD or a designer is insane. I would say out of those three schools SVA is best for art direction (saying this as a Pratt alumn) but if financial stuff is an issue look into FIT. They have a great program.

I’m not familiar enough with those programs to definitively say whether they’re a good base for becoming an Art Director or not, but you might want to add a portfolio school to your consideration. A design portfolio is going to look different from an advertising art director’s. Look up Creative Circus, Miami Ad, VCU Brandcenter...

like

If you have a bachelors I’d definitely consider VCU Brandcenter, it’s a fantastic masters program and teaches you an insane amount in a few years. It’s the best program to become an AD and it’s a direct feeder into W+K.

like

Ya definitely! I just mean are those programs enough to give me a foundation in this area? I expect it’ll take work after these programs to build a strong portfolio but I’m starting from the ground up so I want to make sure these programs are worth it. I also want to know which option would be the most impactful

Pratt Alumni here ... have a career. Check out The Book Shop School for ads. Great way to meet people and do fun stuff .

Definitely focus on the product in your portfolio. Especially if your gunning for AD/CD in the future. Prove that you can generate good ideas, pull them off is step 2.

Moved to industry thinking it’d be easier and less stressful. Definitely easier but the stress now is coming from never knowing if I’m doing a good enough job because I’m not as busy as I used to be. I feel like I could get fired at any point. Also, there’s a huge emphasis here on meetings and socializing, whereas I’m more used to getting my stuff done and keeping the client happy.
