You should talk to the folks who got their dogs approved. What was there approach? Show the landlord your dogs training certificate - to show your pup is a good citizen.
Like the idea of asking neighbors! Need to work up the courage tho since it’s Brooklyn and talking to strangers is discouraged 😂
And unfortunately I don’t have a dog yet, so that’s the predicament - can’t show its good citizenship when it’s still on an adoption site 😢
Have gone through the same thing - my lease has that exact clause and there are a few dogs in the building as well. Note that only service dogs are protected, ie for those with disabilities or medical requirements. Landlords don’t need to allow ESAs.
Are you in NYC? There is a law on the books where if you have a dog openly in the building, and the landlord takes no action in the first 3 months, they can not evict you for it. You could try that route, BUT no rescue in the city will work with you since they require landlord verification.
I didn’t go that route since its important to me to rescue, and I will want my landlords as a positive reference for subsequent rentals/eventual purchase, so we went the route of asking for their approval and if we could pay a fee. They said no :( so we are moving to be able to get a dog when lease is up.
Hi OP - Update here! We asked our landlord again now that our lease is up for renewal and they actually said yes!
Agree with the above! Try to get an emotional support certificate. I know that’s worked for people in the past
Also ESA are not the same as service animals. Your landlord does not need to allow an ESA in the building but they do need to allow service animals, which are protected under the ADA.
