Advice for dealing with a subpar manager? I’ve been staffed on a project with a recent-hire manager known to not be great - as far as I know he’s not very on top of things & doesn’t give much guidance (something I need as I’ve recently joined). Does anyone have any advice?

Be overly proactive (like, way more than you think). Send reminders, schedule time to run through questions and project/work stream updates, etc. While this is a tough situation, it’s an opportunity to learn to manage up.

Thank you, this is useful & will try this approach! It’s my second project and I don’t really know what I’m doing either but hopefully we’ll get somewhere

Help him with onboarding - it’ll go a long way and possibly build a positive relationship in the future. For now though, it’ll suck for you. You could use this is an app for doing things your way

Unfortunately it’s only my second project so I have no idea what I’m doing either 😭

Can relate. If project do not go well you might be blamed. Being overly proactive might indeed help.

Definitely going to try this!

It’s a great opportunity to step up but you’re unlikely to shoulder the blame if things go wrong, assuming the manager is still trying to fulfill the role as manager. I had this happen and got to step-in more on calls without the downside since I was more so rescuing the senior manager in some ways.

I’m new to the firm. My third project my manager was very hands off. He’s wants to have a discussion with me about my performance. He did not give me any support to work with; even when I asked! And my direct manager agrees with him, but it was my third week. What to do? I feel like I’m going to say something crazy. Any advice?

Does anyone have insight on the M&A practice (Transactions Advisory) at Alvarez & Marsal? I received a message from a headhunter on a potential opportunity, but unsure of how prominent the M&A practice is, the typical project size and team, WL balance, culture, etc. I am aware of Alvarez & Marsal being among the maker leaders in restructuring but would love to hear more from someone with more insight.

Clients with toxic cultures: how have you dealt with them? We have a compliance client with a serious culture issue- they regularly throw each other and our team under the proverbial bus, throwing escalations around etc. I am one of the junior partners and suggested having an open dialogue with our C-suite contact to discuss constructive ways of working, at the very least… but the senior partner has vetoed it. Our team morale is pretty bad and we’ve had a couple of people leave because of it.

I’m an Associate XD and I feel like whenever I give input on projects it’s mostly received with slight skepticism from the management supervisor. Is this the norm when you’re a junior on a project?

What approach do you prefer to take when a client thinks the billable hours on an invoice are too high, but you think they are reasonable based on the work performed/deliverables?

Hi y’all. So I haven’t technically onboarded for my firm yet, I’m suppose to start in 3 weeks. One of the projects I’m going to be put on requested to have a little interview with people of the team so I had mine today. The “interviewer” didn’t really seem to think I was qualified for this project at the end of the conversation (agree to disagree with him on that). Regardless, am I in trouble for not fitting his criteria/selling myself enough…kinda worried on my manager’s response….

How many times do you follow-up with clients for an annual review? Do you email and call? I have emailed twice (no calls yet) but no response from the client. Keep trying or wait for them to reach out to you at this point?

Hi Fishes I'm holding offers from Accenture and Wipro, With A it is a generic opportunity where the work and the client would be decided after joining. But the learning opportunities would be more. With W it was a client interview and the client is one of global leader in financial service and I really like to work with this client. W's pay is 2-3L higher than A. This is for Cybersecurity domain where A is comparatively better. I'm looking to stay for long term, Please help me decide.

Currently w TD Ameritrade Institutional (RIA) - manage some Brokeragelink accts @Fidelity as 3rd party. They now require you to sign a form stating you will not be compensated. Questions in comments.

Where do the healthcare consultants go after leaving consulting? Are the salaries in industry comparable based on years of experience?

Have my closing interview with Accenture next week. So far the Director and MD I have met with have both liked me and the recruiter has said that they have both given me a thumbs up and that the upcoming closing interview with the MD is just a conversation. From my research I’ve also read that it’s just a sanity check to make sure I’m not a nutcase. Of course anything can happen, but I’m expecting an offer. (Cont)
