Advice for if a recruiter asks about comp expectations? This is before any interview. They said 100k-200k base and 150-250k TC. I said 200k+ TC and 160k+ base, "depending on other potential opportunities", which is indeed my target. Should I have gone higher than my target or does the "+" and additional note take care of potential issues? I also didn't want to rule myself out straight away, so I thought staying in the middle of the range would make sense.

Ehh... better to give PE firms a high target in the future. Half the time they dont even have a real target and make it up as they go. The most annoying places to negotiate with

Hmmm ok So if I want to bump this up, when I get an offer, can I pull the "depending on other opportunities" blurb and say I'm getting interviews at tech companies that may push my comp requirements up? I am hoping the "+" and that blurb may keep me from being defined by some box And what about more generally? For non PE firms, is the way I went about it the right way to go?

Asking for 160K base? What's that you do and what's your expertise?

Data scientist. This is a recruiter at a PE firm.
