Advice for young attorneys dealing with non-billable workload? I’m still my first two months at my firm but a ton of the work I’m being assigned is non-billable. I understand if I’m not still fully on boarded but how are we supposed to keep up billables while being given time consuming non billable work?

If you aren’t staffed up on billable matters yet say no to non-billable work at your own risk. At my firm you only turn down work when you are at capacity.

If you are at capacity non-billable work is the first stuff you can start turning down. And you get to choose what to turn down. The smart partners are usually very kind to the associates who help them with non-billable stuff though. So be strategic. If the partner you really want billable work from wants help writing an article, help with the damn article.

Account for all your non billable time. If you have to do it in an excel sheet then do so. So that if anyone questions you about “billable time” you can show the non billable you’ve been doing. Non billable time in the beginning is normal. If you’re getting non billable time that is causing you to not meet your billable hours and you have billable hours you can be billing talk to your immediate supervisor and explain to them the situation. Believe me the firm will eventually want you prioritizing billable time over non billable time.

Unpopular opinion: 2,000 hours is way too high of a benchmark to be eligible for a bonus. Unless like 300+ non-billable hours count towards it (maybe half of that be pro bono hours and the other half be diversity, recruiting, etc), 2000 is way too much.

I do mass/class cases and hold a couple leadership positions (these were competitive to get). What should salary be and when should I make partner. I’ll add I work remote and pretty autonomously. Little contact with partners or anyone at my firm.

Hi guys,

I need some advice, I’ve been in a newly created role within a pharma agency for about three months now and it is not going too well. There is little to no structure or direction from senior leadership, no access to client data, little to no billable work. Worst of all, no project is related to what I have been hired to do.

I would like to move on with a different agency asap, but I’m not sure how to proceed with such a short time here.

I just ordered my first Chanel! I never got myself a milestone gift before, but I just found out I passed my fourth and final section of the CPA exam, exactly one month before my 30th birthday. And I busted my butt for it, while working 50+ billable hours a week. I wanted to get something that will remind me of this feeling for years to come. I hadn't decided on a Chanel until I absolutely fell in love with the quilted Trendy CC. I'm ecstatic!

I have a question about mid-size Philadelphia law firms. Does anyone have any insight about what life is like (culture, pay, billable hours, cases, WFH, perks, etc.) as a junior partner/senior associate/of counsel in the litigation department at the following firms: Montgomery McCracken, Schnader Harrison, Stradley Ronon, Dilworth Paxson, Klehr Harrison?

Anyone in Linklaters Singapore?
Looking for insights into pay, culture, billable requirements, staffing structure, any red flags etc.

Any recommendations on how I can help my 62 year old mother find a new job? she has worked in a bakery for over 49 years since immigrating to the US in 89 and the bakery is now closing. She's terrified of not working and I know it's not good for her to stay at home. She doesn't have any clerical or typing skills and I personally would like her to find a job that is not as strenuous or physically demanding as a bakery. she has an accent but can speak english well & loves customer service.

I’m a junior litigation associate at a small firm, and the managing partner says things like “you aren’t providing value to the firm” or “you’re being paid to avoid mistakes like these” when I make mistakes due to, what I believe, to be a lack of guidance and instruction. As a junior I find the hardest part of my job is scheduling blocks of time to do the work while also dealing with urgent things that always come up during the day. And the constant inflow of tasks from partners with priorities. It’s soooo exhausting.
