I teach 5th and 6th grade resource and have several students who do not know vowel teams and long and short vowels. I have the students come to me for 30-45 minutes in the resource room every day so they don’t have to be embarrassed in front of their peers. I’m teaching Touch Phonics (I LOVE the success I’ve had with this program!!) to a couple of students. For the other group, I use Orton Gillingham. Students love to play in the sand, which is a huge “draw” or “buy-in” for them. I also use FastBridge as a screening and PM tool for fluency. With instruction, using the 2 programs listed above, my students’ fluency scores have grown significantly and sky rocketed in the past 2 years!! I am also seeing students apply their skills for decoding to other subjects and in their writing! I was very honest with my students who were so low. I explained to them (and their parents) that this was instruction they “missed out on” and weren’t developmentally ready for back in 1st and 2nd grade or that wasn’t taught back then, due to “waves” in education; so they never learned it. However, I also told them it’s no wonder they can’t read or struggle so significantly...that they can’t expect to be able to read if they have never received or learned the skills! They have all “bought in” to my explanation and work very hard to listen to what I’m teaching and apply these skills to their reading. They are no longer embarrassed about not being able to read; because now they have an excuse/reason that they finally understand! They don’t beat themselves up over it...they decide to let me help them fix the problem! It’s been so exciting to see the growth and see how their self esteem has improved!!! ❤️❤️. I would be happy to share my experience with you if you’d like me to!! If you send me your name, I can search for you on FB or you can leave your phone number and I can call you! I’ve taught for 19 years now and I just learned about and started using Touch Phonics 2 1/2 years ago. This is my 1st year using Orton Gillingham. I’ve been using FastBridge for 2 years for screening and progress monitoring. These have been a total game changer for me and has totally changed the way I teach over the past couple years!! Good luck!! 😁
Wow! You are such a wonderful teacher. Not because of the programs you use necessarily, but because you give your students the gift of confidence. I am referring specifically to how you explain their delays in such a way that it is encouraging.
Work one-on-one to build report and learn more about what might motivate him. From there gradually bring him back to the group until he is fully with them. Find a way to use what they love to your advantage.
Sing spell Read and Write has a Ferris wheel chart for Letter sounds. Bingo is a fun way to learn the sounds.
I use Read Natural because of the rhymes and age appropriate expository stories with comprehension questions and vocabulary. The Read Live online version has a vocabulary game the students enjoy. Read Natural starts with CVC words.
I also use BPST for keeping track of sounds they don’t know and work on those sounds daily. Daily sight words; 5 each day; using a photo flip book for the cards and student takes out the ones learned and replaces with new words from Frys first 300 words.
I use Blast off to Reading for letter sounds and fill in the blank sentences. Anita Archer phonics for Reading is also great! My Lexia an online program will also help build on what you are teaching.
Lots of praise and rewards! It’s hard on middle school students who can’t read. Poor self esteem is common. So look for one on one opportunities so they are not feeling ashamed in front of peers.
