Stick it out. I had a micro manager and HATED IT! But after about 6 months I grew to like and respect them. When they left after 1 year I was so upset. I learned more working for them than anyone else. I honed in on so many different skills I didn’t realize needed extra attention. Also, now that they’re gone I realize how beneficial the little things were that they were asking for. Make the most of your time with them. The biggest question to ask is are you still learning and are you still growing? If the answers are yes, stick it out. If no, try to find a new boss/job/life. 😉
What you need to do first is open your email, then write their address in the “to” box. Next put in a subject line that implies what you are about to write. Then...
J/K I’ve had success just asking for a bit more space (with a CD) and implied that if I messed it up I would go back and fix it how they want happily and not mind the extra work. With accts I’ve had very little luck being direct and just try to avoid them or hiding things from them until they are further along in the process
Sympathies. Your options are limited. Breathe deep, pick your battles, try saying 'ok’ and then do it your own way. Failing that, if you can’t take it anymore, may be time to look elsewhere
Is it your manager or a coworker in another dept?
My manager.
Can you elaborate on how you are being micro managed? I’d like to offer some advice, but there is no blanket answer without understanding the context a little more.
Is this manager talented? If yes, use it as opportunity to show a lot of options and get insights on what works and what doesn't for all sorts of situations. Micromanagers can leave you with good habits and good ideas, if you can tolerate the constant check ins.
If this manager is an untalented hack, then either try asking for more space (you'd like more time bring the work further along) or just do your best to overindulge with options. After a short stint of proactively going to your manager, it's possible he or she won't notice as much you start to back off and ask for feedback on only the big stuff.
