Do it, early pregnancy suuuuuuuuuucks. Although if you work from home, you can probably just loaf and having a standing “meeting” which is really nap time after lunch. That’s what I did!

like

I was deadly exhausted for 2 full months (week 7-15). Barely managed to move my mouse and get 4-6 hours of basic brain dead work done. Fell behind a bit and had to catch up over weekends and in second trimester. Take off if you need to. But try to cut your load literally everywhere else for the next 2 months. I worked, and slept. Hubby handled all else, including groceries, cooking, errands, chores and dog. I sleep like 18 hours a day. 3 hours every evening. Eat dinner. Back to bed for another 12. Still exhausted. Sleep all weekend except to eat. Taking a shower would make me pass out for 2 hours straight in my towel. It's not you, it's the pregnancy. God bless WFH!! I have no idea how women go to work with this. I would have quit, that's how dead I was.

You don’t hear of it because people usually don’t want to share pregnancy news this early, but 100% of us felt sh*%ty and understand it so you’re not alone. I did it with a combination of sick days and toughing it out. There was a phase where every day I’d wake up and get ready, brush my teeth, throw up, brush them again and then go to work. I’m sure I looked ill at work, just tried to keep to myself and sleep when I could/eat what I could. Even if you don’t feel nauseous, your entire body and all it’s functions are working to grow another person and all of your resources will be directed there. Take your sick days! Wishing you a healthy pregnancy!

Sick days. The earlier you do tell people (select one or 2 like MDP or staffer) the better too in my opinion, they can’t help you if they don’t know.

like

I agree with this. Told a trusted MDP I work with and was able to get some much needed nap time.

like

Take the days if you feel crappy. I don’t have unlimited sick days so couldn’t do that but I did put on fake meetings on my calendar to nap and lay down. The nausea and the fatigue are real. Work will ALWAYS be there. So take the time you need to be physically and mentally healthy.

I told the manager for the project, not the team. The first trimester is the worst of the three, it might get worst. The symptoms are physical and psychological until ~week 15. Tell your doctor, there are a few safe medicines to help you.

like

There is medicine for nausea that is safe but it is prescribed by the doctor. I had nausea all day long before I took it.

like

Nap when you need to especially if you’re in between projects and at home. A sick day will help on that day, but your body is telling you overall to slow down which will likely last for more sick days than you have.

Are you sure you’re not sick (cold/ flu/ Covid)? On my pregnancies at weeks 5-7 I felt exhausted but wouldn’t have described it as flu-like (ie no aches and pains, no fever etc). Then week 6 or 7 started feeling nauseous - but everyone’s pregnancy is different. Regardless, if you’re sick take a sick day! It’s truly no-ones business what the cause is. Ps Congratulations !!!

This happened to me as well! I definitely took sick days. I had a great relationship with my manager and she knew i was pregnant - i notified her early bc i wanted any time off to be protected by FMLA. By the end of my pregnancy i had taken maybe 3-5 days total.

Take some time. You don’t need to tell anyone yet— just say you are not feeling well and need to take a few days to rest.

Take time off if you can. I am 13 weeks now and I would never want to go back to 5-8 weeks when the whole body is like not your own body. Just think that it is all temporarily.

Father in law has had a lot of frustration, getting included in two mass layoffs in two years and taking two straight 40% pay cuts at the end of his career. Advice please! I'm scheduled to roll off my current (surge) project at the end of this month. The project is heavy in manual government processes, but my manager is offering to let me lead a workstream because our scope has grown so much and the client needs our help. However, there's another big, super relevant project where I'd get project experience doing analytics, but I likely wouldn't get ownership over anything. Do I extend my current project or try to roll onto the new one?

401k advice requested - 25 years old, live in nyc, make 125k. I’ve always maxed my 401k to 19500 with a split of regular and roth. Always do the 6k of Roth IRA too. New firm has no matching policy. I understand the benefits of tax so maxing it is beneficial, however, I’m almost breaking even each month. Is it smart to slow the contributions, keep investing myself so I will have money for a down payment down the road? Don’t want to pull on my 401k if not needed
