Thank you! Going to look for it now!

I am solo trying learn multiple practice area. Someone previously said solo university. I have been reading west law jurisprudence, competitors websites and doing cle for right now.

I did solo university several years ago...it was probably too general. More like a centimeter-deep than an inch-deep in coverage.

Agreed. You want to do some learning in advance to get competent, but eventually you just have pull the trigger and start filing cases (or whatever your practice area involves).

Join the relevant section of your state bar association, read their listserv emails, do a 1-2 day CLE put on by that section or its equivalent.

If you already have a client, find an experienced mentor in that field, and if necessary, offer to share fees at first with them in exchange for being able to ask questions if necessary (with you still doing as much of the work as possible of course).

Agree with the CLE suggestions. When I started getting into my current practice area (consumer bankruptcy), I bought the audio recording and written materials from an all-day CLE that was titled something like, “The Basics of Chapter 7 & 13 Bankruptcy.” Money well spent IMO.

Are there really such things as “guy movies”? I’ve been married a long time and known a lot of people over the years. I just saw Bullet Train and really liked it. IMDB rated it high so I suggested watching it with my wife. It turned out to be very Quentin Tarantino-esque and she really didn’t like it. Same with British humor (in the US anyway). I thought In The Loop was hilarious, and of course Monty Python. I know there are exceptions but, honestly, I haven’t found many.

Q for associates in boutique litigation firms: When you’ve drafted a complaint/motion/brief to be filed, do the partners allow you to actually sign the filing in your own name? For context, I’m a new associate at a class action firm where there’s ample opportunity to do substantive work & pursue your own case ideas from the get go. Today, I’m getting ready to file a complaint I drafted when a partner told me to remove my signature & insert his instead. Is this standard?

I want nothing more than to start my own practice but feel like I don’t have both the management skills (just starting my second year at a large firm) nor the business skills to do so. That has me thinking that I probably need to go work at a smaller shop to learn the ropes for a while. I understand the pay would be drastically different, but believe its worth it to build those skills. My issue is finding these opportunities? smaller firms obviously don’t market jobs like the larger firms.

Associate in litigation section of boutique firm in South Florida— there are 6 attorneys and four partners, so it’s very top heavy. I actually generate clients (only attorney who speaks legal Spanish) and have a small book. I’d like to be a partner , but don’t think it’ll happen because it doesn’t make business sense for the firm to bring on another partner. Is this a fair assumption? What questions should I ask the other partners to test if they would be willing to invite a new partner?

Looking for advice on what to do with clients if I want to go in-house. We have 5 other attorneys so as of now my clients could likely be absorbed into the rest of the law firm. However if 1-2 of the attorneys here left that wouldn’t be an option. Has anyone done this and have tips?I don’t have an offer yet but I’m trying to prepare. My firm knows I’m exploring this as a career option.

Any of you manage WFH / telecommute more than 50% of the time? When I was an associate, you hardly saw the principal/owner. Now that I’m 7 months into partnership, I just started a set up for WFH myself. It’s basic right now, but once fully set up, I don’t see a need to go to the office other than client meetings. But in my area of law (domestic relations/family), even in a pandemic, people love to just stop by. So that’s one of my concerns if I transition to WFH.
