Yellow lab. He got home late last night after a solo 6 hour train ride. Dad still has 5% vision (imagine seeing the world through a drinking straw) and is handy with a cane, but this is a whole new level of confidence, knowing the dog will steer your away from lots of trouble. And gives snuggles.
@EY1 - the dog's foster parent/puppy raiser flew out from Texas for "graduation." He's a 17 year old high school senior and was pretty emotional too. So grateful for people like him/you who devote more than a year to raise good boys/girls... just to give them away.
I raised one of these dogs. I cried when I handed him over for his official training and cried even harder when he was matched with a person! So glad your dad found his new companion.
I'm sure that must be exciting for him to have a guide dog companion! I imagine it makes him more comfortable to be out and about outside of home
Nice! Had no idea the wait list was so long
What a great Christmas (holiday) story! Happy for your family, OP!
Happy for your dad. Blessings to you and your family. Merry Christmas.
Merry Christmas to you and your family, Op! I hope this good boy/girl has a wonderful Christmas, too!
Op, for those so inclined, is there a group we can donate to to help support the training costs for guide dogs?

Update: his boy is the best boy :-) 🐶
This is awesome. My aunt has been training guide puppies for 30 years. She cries every time she’s gives one away but she never intends to stop
Thanks, Op!
Happy for you and your dad OP. Thanks for sharing. Merry Christmas:)
Awesome Christmas story. Thanks so much for sharing.
@OP, what is the dog's name? (I'm part of the TX raising group - guessing he's from a different city though since haven't had any males graduate this month)
That’s awesome!
Dog named Potter from San Antonio (I think).
Op: I think that pupper that needs a red and gold Gryffindor scarf!
Very nice to see this, hope Potter and Dad have great times together.
Awesome! What breed?
