After being in distance learning for the past year and a half. What are your tips on getting your students motivated for the new year coming up? What ideas or activities can help? I am apart of the AVID program and I am worried my tutorial sessions are not going to go so well after this past year.

I’m AVID too!!! And I am super anxious… so many things were impossible with the younger kids who were new to the class. I’ve decided I’m going to determine my non-negotiables for being in person AND DL (just in case in lesson doesn’t last). Then I’m going to spend the first few weeks almost only doing the things that were impossible to do virtually. I think for me that means bonding and team building. I think I’m going to also start their agenda in that time. But I’m hoping that if I can get them interacting then AVID will get them comfortable with each other and being back to school, and also it might help them communicate online if it goes there.

Love AVID ideas, draw a picture with large butcher paper such as an Orca whale. Give each student a sticky & have them write what the know about an Orca. Next, have students place strictly on the Orca. Finally, read an article about Orca’s then read what students wrote w/o saying who wrote the information. Lots of fun.

First things first, hear them out. Send out a beginning of the year survey asking how they feel about returning to school, what are some things they’re worried about, etc… and spend the first day having casual conversation talking about it. In my BOY surveys I also ask what were some things teachers in years past have done that they’ve liked and disliked and we discuss how I may be doing things similarly in my class. If you’d like a copy of my survey let me know, I’d be happy to share it.

Love AVID skills and strategies, but I taught the AVID elective one year, and what a nightmare that was. I had no direction, no goals, nothing to aim for by the end of the year. It felt like it was Tutorial twice a week and then 3 days of some kind of Weeks at a Glance randomness. Dropped teaching that real quick. Hope your experience is better.

It was a total struggle for me to start. You have to be in total growth mindset mode & very willing to be out of your comfort zone. My brother (1st gen college student & Ivy League grad) actually motivated me to pursue AVID hard. I think it can also be really tough for teachers new to the profession because I’ve had to use what I know about adapting, cutting, & extending lessons to make it worthwhile. But I truly feel it is an incredible experience for me and my babies!

I teach 2nd. This year we are reading a story called “Wild About Learning.” Then we are giving them animal masks to wear. In the past we have read First Day Jotters and made jitter juice.

So let me get this strait… American educators are going to continue using the same old motivational methods that produced millions of citizens who prefer authoritarianism over democracy?

I think it’s quite obvious. Learning activities don’t have to be sugar coated or artificially augmented if they are initiated from questions children have about themselves or the world in which they live. If you are operating a curriculum structure in which children are outside the decision making processes central to the activities they are compelled to participate in… one has to find a way to diversify the curriculum so children have a powerful voice in the content, methods, materials, assessment methodology, environment and time-line they are to experience learning. Childhood is the critical issue here. Childhood does not need to be educated out of the child. Childhood educates… and the educator should plan and prepare accordingly.

Ok. I just wasn't sure which part above prompted your comment. Maybe it's AVID, which I know nothing about. Just trying to figure out what you were getting at. I personally have had many former students reach out to me about how I did things differently and allowed them to flourish, including those for whom the system (which I think you are probably referring to) doesn't normally fit well. The thread was asking for help and suggestions.

Maybe a strange take but I think that we should be more in touch with our internal bodies. We can send astronauts to the moon and rovers to mars but there’s no easy, portable way to scan our bodies to see what’s going on inside (e.g., a DIY full body xray or MRI). I think this could be the next gen of weighing scales that also show various health metrics, track fitness, etc. It could help with prevention and diagnosis. I guess it’s bad for health providers who make $ today from this. Thoughts?
