take care of yourself. find a new job. i’d shoot for higher than 2% though. don’t sell yourself short

I’d shoot for more, but I’d seriously would consider taking their initial offer if they couldn’t go any higher. Moreso because I visited friends and family and went to a wedding last month. Essentially, me being there reminded me of how crucial relationships with my loved ones are and maybe grinding for that lucrative, unicorn job while in public isn’t worth it in the end if I’m always away from loved ones and missing out on key events.

First thing, I would not leave for an industry job with only 2% raise, keep in mind your future raises are going to be shitty. Second, there is never a good time to leave and this comes from someone who had a job offer and then never left because the time was not right. On the other hand, we just pushed out a senior manager who was loyal to firm and worked for this company for really long time. Conclusion, keep looking and leave once you get a good offer. I would notify the top management that it is shitty and you don’t see a future here unless things change. You don’t appreciate working this late and long hours. So if nothing changes, which would not, you did your part so leave ASAP the first good opportunity arises.

Take the offer, but shoot for more. Your life sounds terrible and you are already aware you are missing out. Once you are aware, every day gets worse for you til you leave.

Can always come back to a diff public firm. Spend one year at industry and switch back if needed

I just don’t know if I can confide in anyone at work, as me leaving would further short staff my office. So I’m certain I would be outed almost immediately. As a result, I’m torn on what to do. 1. Take the offer (which would be a pretty good salary for professionals in my market and with my experience) and leave my firm in the lurch; or 2. Ride out another busy season, express my concerns to my manager/senior manager/partner and leave after busy season on a higher note.

@SA 2: I’m at a regional firm. It’s just the client I’m on that has such crazy hours required for their internal control observations. Worst part about is that I don’t hate my firm, in fact I like what they represent and what their goals are...public accounting just isn’t for me. My heart is no longer in it and before too long I know it’s going to affect the quality of my work.

like

UPDATE: I asked for 12.5% and they’ve come back 7.1%. I’ll see if they’ll settle at 9.5%.

Go to a regional firm. I leave work at 5:30 95% of the time. Sometimes I need to stay till 6:30 when I get busy. I also make much more than Big 4

Thanks for the insight, everyone. I’ll see if I can push for at least a 10% raise and will schedule a sit down with my advisor. I just kinda feel bad because he’s a really cool guy (my advisor) and would be pained to see me go. At least out of everyone I respect him the most, because he’s been nothing short of 7 + 93 with me this entire time.

I wouldn’t leave for a less than 10% raise. I think it’s more normal for seniors to leave for a 20%+ raise

3am? No no no

Those 25 surveillance cameras in the count room aren’t effective enough of an observation tool as a mid 20s, apathetic senior, who has one foot and two arms out the door of his firm.

How long do you have to do the walk-throughs? See if your partner will let you work on a more flexible schedule from home

It’s for 6 hours or so. Because of the specifics of the industry you must be there for at least an hour at that time of the day.

Folks, any advice on applying for jobs at a previous client? As a firm we have great relationships with the senior client leadership and I am afraid that the GEP and my RL will eventually find out when I submit my job application. On the other hand, if I tell my RL prior to applying, I will probably end up towards the top of “people to be laid off” list.

I was due for a promotion but then covid hit, and during the peak of layoffs/furloughs, I was given the run-around that we have agency wide promotion freezes, etc. Over the past month, a handful of people have been promoted. I know everyone's situation is different but I can't help feeling snubbed. How do I know whether they are genuinely trying to promote me and can't, versus them stringing me along for as long as possible? I dont want it to come to having to bring another offer to the table..

I interviewed for a position remotely 3 weeks ago with the 3 partners of an agency at the same time, and it went well. The CFO then took 30 minutes after the initial hour to talk more and she asked that I reach out to her for more questions as well as to let her know when I have relocated as I told them that I am about to move. After 3 weeks, I sent a follow-up note to the HR contact and no response all last week. Shall I try contacting the CFO directly since she did ask that I do? Thoughts?
